Offset on Wheels

Well with the last post about opening a gas cap, I felt pretty safe posting this one. Hopefully people wont be able to rag on me for asking this question. What is the offset for wheels? When people say, "35mm offset," what does that mean? How do I determine what it is for my car. I have a 2000 280 sport and I am putting 17 monos on it from the C43. Does anyone know? Thanks!

Just go with something between 35 and 38 mm offset.

It's the millimeters from the hub.

Stock offsets of the C43 are 31mm front and 35mm rear.

The offset is the +/- distance from the center of the wheel width. So in the stock C43 wheels, the Front wheel is 7.5 inches wide and the mounting "face" is 31 mm from the center. On the rears, the wheel is 8.5 inches with a 35mm offset.

I never knew it was the center. All well, you win some, you lose some.

The offset of a wheel is the distance from its hub mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. The offset can be one of three types.

Zero Offset
The hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel.

Positive
The hub mounting surface is toward the front or wheel side of the wheel. Positive offset wheels are generally found on front wheel drive cars and newer rear drive cars.

Negative
The hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheels centerline. "Deep dish" wheels are typically a negative offset.

If the offset of the wheel is not correct for the car, the handling can be adversely affected. When the width of the wheel changes, the offset also changes numerically. If the offset were to stay the same while you added width, the additional width would be split evenly between the inside and outside. For most cars, this won't work correctly. We have test fitted thousands of different vehicles for proper fitment. Our extensive database allows our sales staff to offer you the perfect fit for your vehicle.

You must have a C43 that thinks it is a 1999 E55.

The AMG Monoblocks that come on the C43 are ET35 front, ET30 rear.

Thanks MOE, that is good to know. The only reason I am so concerned is because the car is getting dropped next week and having the correct offset is very important to keep it from rubbing. Its going to be about a 2 inch drop in the front.
