Replacing The Water Pump on a 95 C280
recently, my 1995 C280 started making a horrible scraping noise on startup. So, I looked under the hood, and noticed the water pump pulley was oscillating a bit as it spun, leading me to believe that that was the cause. I bought a new one (which was a hassle finding the correct version) but I am not sure how to get the old one out.
Here is my problem:
I can't get to the 4 screws that hold it in place. The serpentine belt is off at the moment, due to replacing the alternator. I've tried to remove the radiator to get some more space, but I am not sure how to remove it either. It seems ready to come out, but there is a pipe leading from it, to the r134a sight glass, leading me to believe that if I undo the pipe, I will lose a couple pounds of refrigerant into the atmosphere.

When you talk about the 4 screws I'm assuming you mean the allen bolts holding the pump to the block? If so you can get to them easier if you unbolt the PS pump and lay it aside. They are tough to get off so be careful you don't strip them with the allen wrench. Not familiar with a line running from the pump to the R134 bulb; npt one on my '95 c280 because the water pump isn't tied into the R134 line.

I just completed a waterpump on my 94 C280 and it is not for the faint of heart. You need to separate the AC condenser from the radiator and there are two 10mm bolts that hold them together. Once you remove the upper radiator support you will see the bolts.
