About to buy a 1995 C220

This car is my friends car, it has 98,669 miles. its a 1995 excelent condition. I havent bought the car yet but i have a few questions, When he backs up sometimes it stalls out what is it? it hasent happened since october. the 75k service was done, he changes the oil every 2000-2500 miles what servicing should I do? Do they change the tranny fluid at 75k servicing? when I get it should I change the tranny fluid right away? Is there any specific problems I should be looking for? Is this a reliable car. and any recalls? Thanks guys alot in advance,
Joe

98 MB C280
hey, i bought my c220 recently with 70k miles, now have 80. i have kinda the same problem but my car doesn't stall really. the revs jump high when reversing. above 1k really then jerk back and forth. kinda weird. i have change the tranny fluid and all services have been done. the 190's also did this. they might know what the cure is for this.

as for reliability, yea sure. it's reliable. only thing i can think of is the headgasket issue. and jerky tranny? donno if it's normally. but i can't solve mine.

post some pics of it

hey there.

w202's are pretty reliable IMO...I've got 137k on mile, some other members have more (I think the highest here is 355k, around there).

Major issues are front end suspension (lower control arms and bushings), headgasket leak and wiring harness.

Smaller things are like 02 (oxygen sensors) going on ya, bulbs (most annoying).

I had mine stall once or twice when backing up...but was only during the shift between reverse to drive, only then it would stall. I have no idea why it would do that, but hasn't done it in a long time. Maybe something worth asking at the next service if it's not doing it too often.

IMO, changing the oil between 2000 and 2500 is a little too early, don't you think? Most dealers recommend between 5000 and 7500, even for '94 models. I've been doing mine at 5000 intervals, sometimes a few hundred earlier or later, and the engine is great. No burning of oil...even checking the oil at 5000 miles is not dark black color, nice medium dark brown color. So maybe change around 4000-5000 miles, if you don't want to go all the way to 7500 intervals, but 2k seems way too early.

The MAJOR service is at the 120k interval. This is where they change out a lot of stuff (oil and filter change, air filter, fuel filter, ATF change, spark plugs, clean antenna mast, cabin filter, fuel system conditioner, check your hoses and belts for wearing, etc)...this service cost me $800. After that, your pretty much clear for a while. Next major is 135k, which my shop says just simple service (oil and filter change, checking over everything else). I believe the next big major one is 150k, but i'll check with my SA next time i'm in, which is soon for my 135k service.

So all in all, a pretty reliable car. I use mine as a daily driver (about 40-50 miles per day just for school, so errands and other stuff adds up in a day). I think you'll find most of the problems if they have not happened yet, usually occurs around the 100k-120k mark, so just keep an eye out for leaks and such.

Good luck!

It's more prone on the earlier w202s for both models. I think it's more on the 280 side, but there have been a few 220's that have needed headgasket replacements.

Mostly the c280's. I read a tech say that he had done tons of head gasket jobs on the I6, but ONE on the 2.2.

C220 are tough cars. Rock solid.
