Start the car.
Have somebody ( friend ) step on the brake.
See if all the bulbs light up.

If the yellow "Bulb Out" light comes on, only after you put your foot on the brake, then one of your brake lights is giving you problems.

I had the exact same, intermittant problem, and I finally noticed my 3rd brake light flickering when the light went on. I checked, and the bulb was fine. Car was StarMarked, so they replaced the 3rd Brake light assembly, and never had a problem again.

Check your brake light bulbs, check, clean the contacts, and look carefully at your 3rd brake light when you put your foot on the brake, and the light comes on.

i know that earlier w202's have a tendency to have the bulb wiring to haywire :p

sometimes taking the bulb out a few times and putting it back in and cleaning the contacts will help it. I use to get the burnt bulb light every week, but the bulb was fine.

I wiggled the bulb in, cleaned the base a few times and it hasn't come back for months now.

And a lot of the time the rear tail light bulb holder melt.
You can tell if the bulb sockets are hard to come out or they won't some out at all.
You'll be able to see the burn/melt marks when you get them out.
