Question Weird random A/C Blower venting to window defrost

On this 1998 C230 I'm experiencing some weirdness with the air conditioning venting. Randomly, when the AC is running the system will switch from blowing the cold air straight out from the front (main) blower vents redirecting the cold air to blow through the window defroster vent. Then after several minutes it will be redirected back to the main frontal vents.

I don't know why the vehicle thinks the wind shield need the cold air blowing on it when I could really use it blowing on me when it's 98 degrees outside. Do you think the vehicle cares more about the comfort of the window glass than me?

Any suggestions on what the problem is other than the car doesn't like me?

Regrettably the AC controller is faulty--it is randomly selecting air distribution that does not match the auto buttons you have selected--find someone who can try repeat try to recode the control unit!!

The AC vacuum pods are leaking, the pods control air flow between vent and defrost. When they leak, air blow to your windshield. The pods are located under the dash, and required dash removal.

Thank you for this suggestion! Any idea how many vacuum elements there are that control the climate air?...and which one(s) need to be replaced? Also, are there instruction on how to perform the replacement work for a 1998 C230?

This is most definitely a vacuum issue. I note that when I accelerate, the air starts blowing out of the window defroster vent. Ease up on the accelerator and the air begins to come out of the front vent. Let go of the gas pedal and full air comes out of the front vent. You can repeat this all day long. It's clear that that vacuum is affected by the amount of throttle. One odd thing is that if the vehicle is in Park or Neutral pushing the accelerator has no effect on the vacuum to the ductwork controls. One of you smart guys can probably explain why that is.

Now that we know for sure this is a vacuum element issue does anyone have the destructions on how to disassemble the vehicle to change them out? Also, are we talking about a single vacuum element or are there multiple ones that should be changed out? It would be great if there was a procedure posted as a video or with pictures.
