No they are not all the same!
In the US, first MY was 1994. 1996 models got an updated interior, plus newer fuel injection software. In 1997 came the C230 (not 220) in addition to the 5 speed auto transmission. In 1998 came the V6 for the 280 in addition to an exterior upgrade. Also 98 and newer came with the smartkey. In 1999 C230s got a kompressor. In 2000 all models came with SOS. 2001 was the new chassis.
They are all similar, but very much different at the same time!

if i remembered correctly, performance on the c230 kompressor compared to the c280 was just a few tenths of a second off, basically almost identical (7.3 c280 i6 vs 7.6 c230 kompressor, 0-60mph/mt). definitely go for 5-speed auto rather than 4-speed auto, which is available on later model years. later model years have a slightly (imo) better looking/functioning interior. sport version is a slightly upgraded suspension, with slightly stiffer shocks/springs and larger wheels. if u'r gonna go aftermarket, skip the sport version.

And remember there are more tuning options for the 230K, unless you get the I6 C280 (pre 98) then you can get the Mossleman Bi-turbo kit (spiffy).

95 Mercedes C280
if using the mosselman bi-turbo kit what would be better a 95 C280 with 4 speed no ASR or a 97 C280 with 5 speed ASR? Also what would be a good diff swap for a 95 C280?
