So sometimes my up/down on my sunroof isn't working, but the open/close will work. Sometimes and it's rare, the open/close will only work in short bursts. So I would have to let the switch go and hit it over and over until it closes.

Is this just an issue with the switch or is there a relay somewhere?

Sounds like a faulty switch!!

+1. Replace the overhead lamp/switch assembly with a new one; don't go used or you'll end up with the same problem. The one in my W210 cost around $342. Switch could not be replaced due to the way the unit was constructed so it had to be the entire assembly.

Remember the overhead assembly is color-coded so be sure to have your VIN handy or pull your data card for the color code.
