p0405

Hi new to the board, looks like a great resource. I recently pulled a code p0405 off my '98 c230. Also, the fuel cap light has been comming in sporadically. The code is " evaporative emission control system gross leak" I'm thinking the first move should be to hage the charcoal canister that the gas tank breathes through. Can anyone tell me where on the car this is located and what's involved in changing it?

Thanks

I would assume you made sure the gas cap was tight and the gasket on the cap is not torn. Before condemning the charcoal canister, check the fittings at the purge valve and canister shut-off valve.

Gas cap was tight and gasket looked clean and in good shape. By removing and then re-seating the gas cap I cleared the gas cap light. The CEL stayed in though. WHere should I look for those fittings? I have'nt had the car long and have'nt really taken much appart yet.

Thanks again
