HELP!!Problem with my shifter

Ok, so all of a sudden, my shifter has gotten reeeally loose. Its kinda hard to get it into the gear I want cause its just moving around in directions it shouldn't be. Im going to take apart the center console around the shifter to see if I can find a loose bolt or something. Has anybody had this problem? I really dont want to end up somewhere and not be able to put my car in Park.

It may be that nut that is holding it. Look straight down into the shaft of the shift knob and u should see a nut there. See if you can tighten that. You can lift up the plastic surround gate by just gently prying it with a flat head screw driver and that will give u a lot more space to work with!

good luck.

It's probably the rubber bushing for the linkage. The part is 50 cents and the laber is about $30. It won't get any worse, it's just annoying. You can see the bushings from under the car.

So, is it repaired from the underneath, because I cant see anything accessible from inside the car? Has anybody done this themselves?

I found two parts, both pretty cheap. One is a pair of clear-looking cylindrical bushings, and the other was a pair of "tapered spool" type bushings. Any ideas??? There both listed under AT Linkage Bushings on one of the linked websites from jagworks.com.

Go with the electric controlled transmission bushings. They are green colored and much easier to get in. Yes you can do it yourself but you will need some long and skinny plyers.

When buying them just say you want bushings for a 98+ w202 c class.

They are installed from under the car.
