do u have the long shift knob like the 190E's or the shorter leather one like the ML's? the leather ones, u just twist the bottom piece anti-clockwise. i used a pliers for the first time. then just pull up. donno about the 190E style ones.

oh man

this is how it feels to do this difficult project! I swapped my shift knob out (with a solid wood one) on my 94 C220. Well to say I did it, isn't correct. I attempted to, but it turns out to remove the shift knob from 94 C-classes, you must take apart the whole center console- a job the stealership charged big for- and would take a long time fo a DIY-er. It can be done, but I recommend getting a parts diagram to see how everything comes apart- it'll take awhile. The stealership price...

taking apart the center console (assuming your talking about the wood piece that surrounds the shifter and all the window buttons) isn't very hard. I had to do it when hardwiring my radar and just took my time and figured it out.

So what do you do after you take out the wood piece surrounding the shifter?

Unless the stealership lied to me (which is possible) you need to take apart more than just that wood piece- you need to be able to access the joint of the shift knob shaft and the tranny

shift knob

i took it off today. all i did was claw away at it. i cut the leather off, then peeled all the rubber off. under that was the metal shaft and a circle on the top. i hack sawed the top off then slid the new knob on like butta. the new one i put on was off a newer benz and had the twist thing at the bottum and that tightened it nicely.

Can someone post some more info on how to remove the shift knob from a 94 C220? I'll be swapping my shift knob soon...and I know with my BMW all you have to do is pull really hard without hitting yourself in the forehead...is that what I'll have to do with my w202?
