Instrument cluster indicator problem?

I have a friend that owns a 1999 C230, he called me yesterday to tell me that a little Plier icon had lit up on his instrument cluster. He also said that there also was some negative number that appeared as well. I think it was around -400 or so...he also said that his fuel gauge indicator was not accurate as he had just filled his tank the gauge did not rise...I have no idea as to this icon..anyone have ideas?

thanks

The little wrench icon plus the - 400 means the car is 400 miles overdue for it's service.
If the fuel gauge keeps acting up, he will probably have to have the senders ( 2 ) in the tank replaced.
Had this done recently on my 2000 C 230 K, lucky for me, covered by warranty.
I would also recommend, that he should switch brands of gasoline.
