1996 C220 No IR key
Just drove this car home... unlike my ‘98 C230, this car has a mechanical key ignition... now it won’t start and the red and green lights in the mirror flash alternately, not in unison.

Update... it seems that the key turns but doesn’t unlock the driver door... there is no keyhole in the passenger door.
The door was locked with the window open and, when the key wouldn’t unlock, I pulled the lock through the open window, hence the immobilizer activating. How can I reset this? I assume the vacuum pump has died.

Just to clarify, it's only a mechanical key and no remote?
Have you checked the Car Battery voltage? Is it low?
