While we were on a vacation, my daughters 2000 C230K was at home so I finally was able to pull the instrument cluster and send it off for repair. Basically all three LED displays were mostly dead - you could not even read mileage anymore on the center one. I sent it to odo-pro.com. When we got back - it was waiting for me.
As many have reported, if you use the real MB extraction tools ($25 on amazon), its easy to pull out and if you are careful you can remove it without removing the steering wheel.
This small company takes your old unit that you send, and they remove the old LDC's and solder in new ones along with any light bulbs. And then ships back your same unit cleaned up after they test it. It is basically a one day turnaround plus both shipping times.
And back in and now everything works on it.
$99 plus your shipping costs to send it to them. No complaints with my service. Note they don't repair other issues, just the LED displays and bulbs.
