P1817-2

2000 Mercedes C280 Sport Edition
VIN: WDBHA29G2YA847571

ESM-Electronic selector module
P1817-2 - Component 'Reversing lamp' has a short circuit to battery. Stored&Current

I do have 3 other codes remaining, but I believe I know how to fix them and they are included in my Vehicle Diagnostic Report.

I have a feeling I have to completely disassemble the center counsole to diagnose this and I wanted to confirm this with the talent we have amongst MBWorld forum users.

I do have WIS/ASA access but have not found this code after an extensive search.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Don't you mean ESM? (Electronic Selector Module)
The question is do I have to disassemble entire console to do so, or are there more direct methods, or perhaps is the short downstream of the ESM?

Thanks

Yes, to access this, you need to disassemble the center console.
Any liquid spillage onto the center console area in (recent) past?
Are your PNRD display still visible in the cluster?
It may be as simple as cleaning up that module with crc electronic cleaner. Allow to dry, erase codes, retest.

Thank you for confirming. Are there any disasembly instructions available anywhere? My WIS/ASA manual seems to be lacking in this department. I tend to break areas with hidden fastners and funky clips.

I have it apart. Did not find any evidence of spilled liquids, but I used contact cleaner on it anyway and retested with same result. Is it possible that all I need to do is replace this IC BTS65OP shown in this picture? It has 4 pins that directly feed the Gray/Yellow wire that leads to the left rear reverse lamp and it always has 12VDC present.

Turns out the P1817-2 code was set because of the absence of reverse bulbs. Because the car has natural leakage current in this circuit it saw the 12V leakage as a short to positive.

So if you have this code. Replace bulbs, or put new reverse bulbs in and it may solve the issue.

No mention in your post of any 'check bulb lighting' on your cluster display. You got no indication any of the bulbs were out?

None whatsoever.

Was ready to go to a junkyard to buy another one but my son has a background in electronics suggested I put bulbs in. Sure enough he was right.

I bet MB sells a bunch of ESM module$ for this cau$e.

Great benefit to have on these older MBs.
