Where is the Engine Number located @ I think Mechanic lied about changing engine.

Where is the Engine Number located @ I think Mechanic lied about changing engine.
Hi a I need to know the location of the Engine number and see if I can cross reference it with the original Vin#. Where can I find this?
Mechanic said that he change the engine in my GF's C-Class I personally think that he lied, or if he did change it he didnt do any work to test the engine out he just flipped em and said its good.
I've replaced the spark Plug Seals (They were hard as a Rock)
I've replaced the spark plugs 3 Times (The Spark plug Seals were bad and leaking oil into the Spark plugs)
Engine Gasket seal, it obviously had not been replaced.
Oil Seperator
Camshaft magnet
Camshaft Position Sensor.
Crankshaft sensor
I was never offered to see the Engine Core
