Check Engine
Just bought a 99 c230 k wit about 140000km it was running fine then check enigne light comes on, i go to bring it to dealer they want $250 to tell me whats wrong so i wanted to know if there is some way to find out wit a obd to read my codes. I went to a couple of shops they say that i have to go to dealer which i think is bs.
I changed plugs and oil no change,
I do notice these problems wit the car:
1. On cold start the engine begins to over rev, enough to shake the car then it goes away after 5 sec.
2. Upon accellerating the enigne cuts fuel or shutters around 3500rpm same on the highway basically i cant go over a 140km/h eww.
3. I also tried resting by taking of the battery no change check engine comes back on within 24 hours.
I live in Toronto plz reply wit ne suggestion's thnx

Could it be the mass airflow sensor?
Gamma-
Go to a local car parts store and invest in an OBD2 scan tool. The cheap ones run $99 and connects to your cars OBD2 port down below the steering column on the right. If it is the MAF sensor, you're looking at a $350-$380 part (new from one of the site's sponsors). Or, see about finding one from a salvage yard (but no guarantees). If not the MAF, it could be another sensor (again invest in the OBD2 as you'll use it over and over).
Good luck.

Computer Check
At our shop we charge the customer $35.00 to plug in the computer. If they decide to have the work done and are willing to leave the car then it's a free charge. Granted some independent shops are not going to have the software to check all cars they should however cover 80% of all cars out there. Most of the time i think dealers over charge. Like going to a concert an having to spend $5.00 for a coke.
I do agree with the last poster........You could very well have a bad Mass Airflow Meter.

on my Palm Pilot. I just keep the Palm Pilot and the cable in the car. This tool
is more advanced plus you can record logs and analyze data on the desktop. I
found mine on ebay.

i would check for vacum leaks first, but it sounds like a mass airflow sensor to me too, that seems to be realy common on these cars, and this subject comes up a lot. i had to replace mine at about 80,000. it may be worth a shot to try and clean the old one out with throttle body cleaner that says no residue, i have never tried this myself, i heard about it here on the boards. whatever you end up doing, dirty air filters are a mass airflow sensors mortal enemy. i don't know if the 250 is canada money or not, but my dealer charged about 400 for the part and labor, a scan tool is a great investment, and will tell you what's wrong with all cars that have obd2 hookups.

here in the US, Autozone will scan your car for free and give you the codes. classic MAF codes are:
P0170 fuel trim malfunction- Bank 1
P0173 fuel trim malfunction- Bank 2
dirty air filter will foul MAF. Search forums for CEL or MAF; most common w202 question, I believe.

When you read the codes, it shows the order in which they occured.
Better read your manual that came with the 3100.

To erase codes. Assuming you're linked & the key is on!
1. Press & release ERASE button.
The LCD display will ask you " SURE ".
2. Press & HOLD the ERASE button, until it shows DONE.

even when I press the link button it say's ErPr but the flashing car comes up on the mid left side of the screen then i press the erase button the ErPr comes up and i hold it for more than 60 sec, it still does noting by the way the only way i get to see the codes is by hitting the small button in the middle im assume it's the rest button man this frustrating.
this is what im doing i trun the ket until all the light come on the vdo srs etc..
is light up then i trun on the obd. then i hit link for a sec it say ErPr, then i hit the erase button and hold it and ErPr comes up again flashing wit two waring beeps and notin happens after that.

I will try again making sure the cable is all the way in, one more question is there a away to clear the codes from the obd2 reader itself without it being hooked up to the car? because again when i hit the erase button it say ErPr.

Just plug it into the car, solid.
Turn the key to position 2 ( just before " start ".
Push " Link ".
After a few seconds you should get the codes.
Then push " Erase ".
It will ask you " Sure ".
Hit & hold the " Erase " button again.
After the codes are cleared it will say " Done ".
