1997 C200 A/C NOT WORKING.
,I took it back to where i get my A/C regassed&they mentioned/said/told me that there's NO leakage (gas/oil) from either the compressor, condensor, or evaporator coil.BUT/HOWEVER........,apparently the cabin filter (didn't know there was one as it's neither been cleaned/changed/replaced in 10yrs of service!!!!!!) is blocked/clogged &it also could be a blocked/clogged evaporator coil.......They quoted me $1700K AUD to remove the dash!!!!!!.Is there anything else that could/would cause this problem&an other way to remove the evaporator coil WITHOUT having to pull apart the dash&removing it?!!!!!!!....., avoiding driving "Vagner" wagon as it's 43C here today in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia!!!!!!
sigh.
(sorry no C200), it is a simple DIY procedure. The logic is a clogged filter restricts air flow across the evaporator.
Low air flow and the evaporator may ice up.
Any feeling that the volume of air coming out the ventilation vents is less than you would expect? Does the fan sound
strong but the air flow weak? If air flow is strong it may rule out the filter but after 10 years, it would probably be a good
step anyway.
I don't have personal experience with replacing the cabin filter but I've heard with the filter removed
you may be able to look up and see the evaporator coil and check for dirt buildup, leaves, etc.
You might also ask the AI sites for debugging help. I like chatgpt.com. Ask:
1997 mercedes c200 and is getting insufficient cooling from the ac
Could a clogged cabin filter be the cause? how would i diagnose a clogged/blocked evaporator coil?
I got what looks like a very logical, accurate step by step procedure.
