C230 SS at HIGH speed

Last weekend I went 125 in my car, tonight i hit 140!!
the roads were deserted (3am) no cops, flat straightaways one after another.
the car handles so well, it is great at high speed!
to me there is no difference in the way the car feels at 55mph or at 140mph, only the scenery passing by your window faster!
boy after going 140, and hitting the brakes to slow down to 100 to take the off ramp, 90mph feels so slow.

my salesman let me test drive an 04 C200 Kompressor.

Made me take it up to 100mph, then go FULL on the brakes and swerve.

Well i'm still here , right : ). And that's proof of how stable this car is at those speeds ...

my car is still fairly new, but i've had it up to about 110 and it doesn't feel as stable as my bmw did. i notice it all around and i had mentioned that my car gets easily pushed by strong winds whereas my bmw did not. however, i think part of the lack of stability is one of two things. 1) being used to driving the bmw for little over 3 years, and 2) i think the continental sport tires suck. i can't wait to wear them out and get new ones, but i'm pretty good on tires so that's not happening for awhile. anyone else have the conti sports and think they are not that great? car tramlines pretty bad and the car tends to slide sometimes when taking sharp turns at high speeds.

just for comparison, my bmw came with michelin pilot sports which were awesome but tread life was quick. replaced them with the bridgestone potenza's (forget what model but they were pretty much their top ultra high performance tire) they were equally as good IMO but MUCH better treadlife and slightly less expensive. i replaced my michelins after about 18k miles and they were pretty much bald, but put about 25k on the potenza's and had at least 50% tread left when i sold the car.

You may have a speedo problem. The C230 is limited to 130, some cars will go as high as 135 before the ECU reduces power enough to slow you.

i think my 330 was governed around there too. i remember plenty of times the car cutting off just around that 130 mark. pretty annoying, but then again, we shouldn't be driving at those speeds anyway :p

i don't think they were the same that came on my bmw though. i saw a C230 in the showroom with them, and they looked different than the one's that came on my bmw. different tread and the sidewall was kinda different. i think MB puts a all-season michelin

Outland, you seem very knowledged on MB's so I'll ask you this. i know bmw's speedo is slightly inaccurate at higher speeds (at least on the 3-series). do u think MB shares this as well?

I've also taken my C230 SS up to 125MPH, and the car is very stable and I'm sure I can hit 130MPH limiter no problem.

However, my girlfriend gives me the dirty look from the passenger seat. So I slow down to crusing speed. :o

I think the Pilot Sport helps a lot at high speed,I love them, but I don't know if I would get them again if they wear out, since they are pretty expansive. I'll probably give Yokohama AVS Sport a try or Pirelli P-Zero Nero

when i test drove my car with my saleswoman we went 100. i mostly wanted to test acceleration, like 0-60 though.

hmm, yeah i notice this car is more affected by wind but the stability is MUCH better that my BMW at high speed. suspension and steering is mint. i think my stock Conti's are very very good actually, they are performers in rain and dry, they never never slip unless i want them to. i will be taking them off for my 18" wheels/tires soon anyway. they'll be my spare set. yes i also noticed it is hard to turn sharply at high speed, i was doing 120 and trying to make a turn and it slipped a little but but regained traction quickly after. not much drama. my bmw + high speed = bumpy, jittery, very tense and stressed, lots of drama. BUT i just found out i have a bent rim so that would do it.

I see no "problem" with it saying 140 hahahah. my handheld GPS says 131 and that is ususally 5mph slow, i was probably going 136 then, up hill in 6th gear too. i never felt the speed limiter kick in before i ran out of road. i could have sworn the speedo said 140 but it's a bit hard to watch it while driving that fast ...

i hit my speedlimiter in the 323i at exactly 135mph, you really feel it kick in, it's like the ESP going off, fuel gets cut :v but not anymore since i got my shark injector bye bye damn speed limiter :v

i KNOW my speedo on the 323i is whacked, it is i think 1-5% faster and the margin increases the faster you go!! there is a law in europe where speedo's have to be the correct speed or faster, so BMW makes them faster as well as other german cars. kind of misleading.

btw a car will hit the speed limiter sometimes but go a little bit over it because it doesn't apply the brakes or anything. also sometimes the speeed limiter comes in a little late, not sure why. also it helps if you're going down hill you'll go even faster over the speed limiter. gee why do i know all this stuff...

ctc230k,

140, great. Even though there is a limiter, MB techs have even said that it is a hit and miss for it to kick in at the same time everytime. As previously talked about my c320 coupe that we picked up at the plant has run 145 and it was still freight training. Rock solid stable. Your also right when you slow back down to 80 you want to get out and see why the car has stopped. Speed is decieving.

yeah it is. Once I was driving back from Miami in a Maserati 430. Speedo is way off in the car. sat at what I thought was 75. 3500 revs. Everyone was going soooo slow. Turns out I was sitting at 110. Made it from Miami to Montgomery in 8 1/2 hours.

I just installed a set of P-Zero-Nero's on our C230 SS after I cut one of my rear Pilots, great tires so far, should last alot longer too...

I think there are a lot of great tires to choose from in the similar level of performance segment.

Dry Traction I don't think there is too much differents, but I really want to pay attention to the wet traction on my next set of tires. Since I like to drive a little bit faster in the rain too.

yes! wet traction appears top notch on the Potenza's that was my biggest concern with sport tires
