Monkeys on a Bender?

Sorry, can't find the threat that originates this rant...

Did anyone ever test these things after design? This is just nitpicking, but come on...What was going through the QA department's mind?

"I know...instead of just washing the windshield with the washer spray, let's douse the entire car...windshield, roof, trunk, rear windows...everything

Steering wheel controls? I think the Flintstones had 'em?...Hey, let's put a volume control button 12 inches from the main volume control. But then let's make the driver scroll through 10 menus before being able to switch a track on the CD or radio staion, that'll be safe, right? Oh, and let's not show him the time elapsed, either...a separate button in the midst of 6 others will be good for 10 seconds of that....and we should leave off a track or station up or down button, let's make him type in the track number...all in the name of simplicity and safety. Ha.

You know what would be cool? If the trunk flew open upon release.

Then, to really show what we're made of, let's offer a stereo without any thought to dampening all the plastic in the cabin.

But how are we really going to impress passengers? 4 unusable phone buttons, they should really come in handy. Programmable hot buttons? What are those?"

Lol, sorry fellas, just had to vent...great car with some glaringly obvious design flaws...

The prominently displayed non-functional phone buttons irritate me.
I'd rather have another cup holder.

Just so you know you can adjust the windshield washers nozzles and direct them wherever you want, you can also change the spring rate from the trunk release, open the trunk, remove the trim on either side and you'll be able to adjsut the spring by hooking it on another hole.

I think the real design flaw is not being able to change radio station with the steering wheel... they probably forgot it for 2005 cuz in 01-04 you could program your butons to change to preset channel or scan through them.

Thanks, I was hoping some solutions would come out of my wine-induced rant...

Yeah, the pre-sets thing is annoying too...I thought everyone was just missing it in the settings menu in the multi-function display, but nope, it can't be done.

Now if instead of hooking up with Motorola they offered integration of everyone's phone, those little phone buttons wouldn't be there laughing at us all. The worst part is, I have a moto, just not one of their's...

An emergency hand-brake would have been nice too, esp for the 6-speeds...

Ok, I know all this has been talked about before...time to move on

I remember someone here posted a link to a company making a kit to fit pretty much every moto phone in the MB....

that's still better than the bmw 3-series having the CD changer in the trunk. I just checked bmwusa, their re-designed 3-series still got the CD changer in the trunk.

They probably figured that "radio" is dead anyway, at least that's my opinion after having XM for the 2 years!
I'm so observant, I only realized last night there was no cassette player in the stock radio! Not that I'd ever use it.

I KNOW there are plenty of people out there with the engineering know how to design a retrofit handbrake for this car

bool rant = true;

Looking at the car from a computing standpoint, it's a mess of terrible digital design. The standard for the communications in the car changes every few years (from D2B to MOST now, I believe), keeping us from being able to upgrade anything related to the speedometer, radio, or cd changer (officially, at least). Using fiber optic cables (a difficult material to work with in small spaces because of it's need to run straight) is one of the silliest things (you don't need that communications bandwidth: on a fiber cable like they use in that car, you could run about 20 phone conversations!). And for pete's sake, there's no need to have empty menu placeholders when the said option (i.e. - telephone, radio) is not in the damn car! Modular programming, people! It's just that linking everything together under one roof, as MB's do, is asking for trouble. If one fiber link goes bad (melts due to proximity to heat source, for instance) the likelihood that you can't start your car or use your steering wheel controls or use your CD changer goes up dramatically.

And, in terms of cost-effectiveness, it makes absolutely no sense to create a new standard in CD changers when the current standard
1. Works
2. Is manufactured cheaply

Besides the whole DIY crowd, most people buying MBs would go for the stock radio-CD changer anyway. No need to make it so difficult for the DIY crowd to add to this car.

rant = false;

One of the salesman tried to impress me with the fiber optics...I chuckled and said "Why?"...he had no response.

Ah, but the cars are all PRE-wired, and that's listed as an OPTION. Let me use those buttons for something else!! 6 completely useless buttons. Hey, at least everyone thinks there's a built-in phone. Lol, that just makes it all the more depressing ...

If you want to drive rally style cut a section of fuel line with a slice down the middle and slip it over the extended hand brake cable. Stab and steer Auto X.
