Probably nothing, but still...

Hi there, I have a question. It's probably nothing important, but I'm not sure:

I have 2002 C230K, auto. When I "floor it", tachometer goes to about 5, 6 or 7000, when I release it, it lowers to about 4.5-5000 and STAYS there, even when I slow down and go about 30-40 mph. When I completely stop, it goes to 1000 where it should be. Other times after releasing it or when just driving, it goes to 3-3.5 (where it should be).

What can it be? Do I need to go to a MB dealer to get my car checked? But when I try to get the same "problem" - I can't! it only happend twice. Could it be that I've accidentaly turned manual-style gear selection and it can't go from 1 to second?

I hate that feature. I'm used to resting my hand on the shifter of my manual trans. car. I get into an MB loaner (11 in less than 1 year) and I rest my hand on the shifter and before you know I'm at redline on the freeway at 70 mph, Doh!

I used to do this until I read an article about manual transmissions which stated that it's not good to rest your hand on the shifter -- if I remember correctly, it can cause wear to the gear "dogs". I believe the synchros, or other parts, are subject to engagement even if you gently nudge the shifter.
