Post from another site. C-Coupe down for the count
And the firemen had a hard time extinguish it!! took around 10 minutes to fully extinguish the car!!
Any theories? Sounds like the wiring for the taillights shorted and started a fire that somehow spread throughout the rear compartment, maybe through the foam that's back there? I just can't see there being that much immediately flammable material back there, unless it was using the gas in the gas tank as fuel. It would had have to have been a pretty serious spark or small fire back there. MB-Tex and leather don't seem to be very flammable (I'm sure MB would have made sure that the stuff doesn't burst into roaring flame after someone drops the lighter or a cigarette butt). There's that cloth covering the trunk, but that doesn't seem very flammable either. All that's back there is the wiring for the lights, the Bose amp (if he had that) and the rear fuse box (few other things probably too).
I've seen this sort of thing happen once, but to a 745i. That's just really, really nutty.
