CLE?

According to Mbspy....there will be another MB model coming out in 2004....this time they called it CLE. A 4-dr coupe based on E-class. Strange, eh....a coupe but with 4 doors!! I think MB designers are soon to be gone crazy, because this car just looks like a 3.2TL with MB headlights! I hope they will make further changes to the design. IMO, its not appealing to me....

John: please dont move this! There isnt a thread for CLE yet. Let it stay here....

Well, I guess that begs the question: what's a coupe? I always thought that a coupe, by nature, had to be a two-door. Isn't this just a sloped-back sedan? Of course, my baby isn't called a hatchback either.

From the side view, it resembles Altima!

Hasn't it become obvious that MB Marketing will call ANYTHING a coupe (no matter how ridiculous), as long as it helps sell cars??

I'd seen pictures of that car some time ago - except the pictures were of the version with suicide doors. This made more sense for the coupe vs. sedan argument, because the rear door could only be opened by a hidden interior handle when the front door was open. Personally, I don't know how MB expects people to squeeze through those small openings.

I thought a coupe referred to a car that had 2 doors and was not a convertible. The C-Coupe is kinda the Mercedes version of a hatchback. Reminds me of the VW Corrados where the G60's were also 4-cylinder supercharged engines.

Like the hidden b-pillar design. I wonder what it looks like with the windows down though.

I thought this quote was funny, not sure why:
"the two-wing door concept reminds more on cheap US-Pickups than on a coupe of the higher middle-class." :p

The car actually looks pretty cool, but also looks like MB borrowed a lot of ideas from other carmakers. It also doesn't have the classic look of a typical Mercedes-Benz.....maybe an attempt by MB to draw consumers from groups who wouldn't normally go for a Benz?

Absolutely not!

I seriously doubt MB will make a hatchback for that market segment. A wagon (Estate to my european kin) perhaps... but not a hatchback.

Bottom line: It will not sell if its one.

In Europe it will likely sell fine - people there don't have the American anti-hatchback hang-up. Look at Saab for instance - I think all of their hardtops are hatchbacks.

The bigger question regarding how well this car sells - is what does it get you? I think the E-class is a better sedan and the CLK a better coupe. I'm not sure where this thing is supposed to fit into the mix. Unless it's supposed to be priced between the E and the C - then maybe.

Cheers, BT

MBSPY says the price will be higher than the E-class at over 50,000 Euros.
