want to buy c230k
hi guys im in the market for a used c230k, i found one and im in love with it, im just still a little scared of what the motor sounds like, ive seen one that was really bad it sounded like it was totally going to die soon and ive seen one thats kinda loud but it smooths out, i was just wondering can anybody help me on this, what is the engine suppose to sound like, is it loud? compared to an amg or something. so confused thanks in advance guys

From the one's I've heard, yes it's loud, much more so the old 2.3 liter version than the new 1.8 liter version.The old 2.3 liter supercharged I-4 used in the 1998-2003 SLK230 kompressor, 1999-2000 C230 kompressor sedan, and 2002 C230 kompressor coupe sounds very coarse and makes clickety clack sounds like a diesel. The "new" 1.8 liter supercharged I-4 that is in the current C230k sedan and 2003-2005 C230 coupe is quieter and more refined, but you of course can hear the whine of the supercharger, which some people like and some don't. Its only loud when it starts up...that's the sound from the cat preheat cycle. The supercharger is running compressed air to the cat.
Don't go with the 1.8L C230 Coupe, you'll be dissapointed by the power difference. Despite having a only a 3HP deficit against the 2.3, it just doesn't pull like the torquey 2.3. Plus, a simple pulley swap puts the 2.3L at 230-240HP.
Does it make strange sounds at start up? Sure. BTW, the 1.8 makes much of the same sound at startup. It does run smoother once the bypass closes. Does it make more noise than other Benz motors? Sure, but most of that is supercharger whine. A C32 is just as loud.

hey outland what pulley swap are you talkn about is it anywhere else on this forum i can read about? sorry for sounding so noobish but im new to this, and i think im a lil fcked up in teh head but the c32 sounds like a purr compared to the kompressor to me. i dont know but thanks for the info
