California residents: aftermarket extended warranties?

Has anybody in California been able to successfully buy an extended warranty? Apparently there's a law that states that no company can sell direct to residents of California, only dealerships can. I believe Warranty Direct can, but they do not cover AMG models. I checked with my dealership, which offered my Millenium, but found out that they also do not cover AMG models. I bought the car used, so I did not have the choice of purchasing the extended warranty within the 1st year.

Any recommendations on dealerships to call? Has anybody been able to purchase a decently priced one?

I bought the car used, so the factory extended warranty is not a choice for me. =\.

That sounds pretty good though.

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
So many people were screwed by warranty sellers from 1970 to 1995 the California passed laws that require an acceptable insurance company back up either dealer, manufacturer, or third party warranties. One component of the law says only car dealers can sell warranties. That is so there is a valuable license at risk that can be jerked if the car dealer cheats you. (I think it just stiffles competition.) You might want to look to the state page for hints and tips to get a warranty. I have to agree that it is tough to get one for a desireable car, like an AMG.

I reviewed some of the contracts, and found only the factory extended warranties had value for me. Now I'd like to find one for less than $3,000! Courtesy in Chico is not the value they once were, offering only about a 10% discount.

Great info, thanks! I will check that link out.

Called a bunch of MB dealerships today and got some quotes with the aftermarket warranty companies they use. The max coverages up to 100,000 miles were almost $5000. And the lowest coverage for just powertrain was slightly below $3500 or more depending if there is a deductible or not. The lowest I found for powertrain coverage was $3000. Prices are pretty crazy. I'm not sure if we would be able to find any sub $3000. I was hoping to settle for something that would cover the major components, especially the engine, supercharger, diff, tranny from the AMG model, but the price for the powertrain warranty was what I was expecting for a bumper-to-bumper. Much more compared to even the large aftermarket warranty companies out there that would sell direct to customers. Time to look around some more, but my factory warranty is almost out, so I should I probably get one of those soon, least there's an option to finance.
