As for clear side markers, painted sides or euro strips, that's another "preference" call. I like having the sidemarker lights, so that's why I opted not to get impact strips. If money is an issue, painted sides are a reasonable mod that you can DIY. But IMO, I'd go with the impact strips if it were between painting the sidemarkers vs. impact strips.
I think you should go with whatever you like best and not others opinion.
It's the difference between looks vs. performance. It's the difference between flash vs. clean.
Answer these questions and you could probably get more "definitive" answers:
1) What's your price range (including tires)?
2) What style do you like the best? (mesh, 5 spoke, 6 spoke, 7 spoke, 8 spoke, 9 spoke)
3) Do you want the rims for style, performance, or both? (could mean the difference between $1500 / $6,000 dollars)
4) Do you want 1 piece, 2 piece or 3 piece rims? (difference is 1 piece is cast/molded into 1 entire rim, 2 piece has 2 separate pieces - usually the base and spokes are separate, 3 piece has 3 separate pieces - usually inner-base, outer-base and spokes) If you bend a rim on a pot-hole, you can replace just the bent portion of the rim on a multi-piece rim, but on a 1 piece you either have to replace the rim completely or have the one portion of the rim fixed, which is a pain because the entire rim needs to be taken off.
5) Make a specific decision on 18's or 19's. This affects your price also. (As for the ride quality, unless you drop the car on coilovers or change to performance shocks, you shouldn't notice that much of a difference. It'll be rougher, but not too much regardless of whether you choose 18 or 19).
6) Do you want staggered setting (tires) or the same setting all around? (This affects price as well, including when you have to get new tires) Remember, staggered tires can only be rotated from one side to the other (only if they're directional). With the same settings all around, you can rotate your tires (i.e. more "cost" effective, but not as much rubber, which means less grip to the rear wheels).
