well if you're 20, after this incident, your insurance premium is gonna hit the roof and it's gonna stay that way for a long, long time.

i didn't mean to upset you but I got in an accident in early 2003 and the insurance company is still charging me for it. I don't know when it will go away. my friend told me under California law, the insurance company can charge you until they recover their loss.

I'm very sorry to hear about this, too. Hope you're doing all right and what matters most is you're all right.

Good luck!

couldn't you just take the insurance money, buy a new car then change insurance companies?

i believe the insurance companies share records, so my premium would be high with another company. Another reason for me not to change was my insurance company paid the max for the repairs. Some years ago, I had another insurance company and some kid hit my parked car. that insurance company specified that "economy" part should be used in the repair. that was uncool. I would rather pay a high premium and not having to worry about the use of "economy" parts in the repair.

that sounds like Allstate!!! I was reading one of their propaganda booklets, i mean brochures, and it said right in it that they make you use their own choice of bodyshop with parts that are as good as OEM but cheaper.

however, the GOOD thing is that he's 20 so pretty soon he should be turning 21. I just had to move my plan to a different agent (moving, although not too far) and they told me that my new premium would be $$$$ (like $$ more than the old one, so i was cool with that) BUT that as soon as I turned 21 (Aug 30! woohoo!!!) it would go down to $$$ which is almost HALF of my current one!!!! So, hopefully when he turns 21 he will get a break as well. (By the way, those numbers are in 6-month increments as that's how often they bill me.)

Oh yeah, and if he gets married it will go down again... "Well, I've got good news and bad news.. the bad news is that I'm now married to a smelly, old, dog of a woman... the good news is that I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance!"

Ben,

Very sorry to hear about this accident. I've seen your car at the local mall from time to time and it will definitely be missed. But very glad you came out ok with no serious injury. So what car are you thinking of next?

You're lucky then. I've never hears of a rate drop at 21. Most companies do not reduce the rate (significantly) until the age of 25. With getting married, you can switch over to a "multi driver" policy which is most likely less than 2 individual policies. However, your risk has more to do with your age, type of car, where you live, how much you drive, where the car is kept, and if you have an anti-theft device.

Are you suggesting fraud?? If so, you better hope you never have to file a large claim. Replacing your car could be the smallest of your problems...

*coughs*someone I know filed a 12K claim w/his c class first week he had it(he ran up a curb when he fell asleep). Everything was fine. 'he' didnt FEEL like he was lying since HE has been w/his gf for over 6 yrs lol its literally california common law marriage. 3 yrs ago though I noticed that some insurance companies finally started checking though. Not to worry though guys if you do not have a significant other-you can get equal discount if you have B average grades in college.

most companies will significantly reduce the rate of a male once they turn 25 OR, if they are inder 25, if they are married. So single and >25 = married and <25. I'm sure it's based on statistics and not hunches. So, my uneducated guess would be that married coupples under 25 have a very active private life and so the guys are more relaxed and less-prone to doing stupid crazy stuff, an effect similar to raise in maturity levels
