'05 COMAND installed
Just have a chance to post my new US-spec COMAND installed a couple weeks ago . Just trying to clarify, 05' COMAND (might apply also to euro-spec) is absolutely plug and play. The COMAND(at least mine) will work FINE without any SDS programming and will NOT produce any error message. I used it for a week without any problem before I get the COMAND set to present. The only advantage of getting it programmed is getting a compass (and the road) menu on the instrument cluster (shown on pic below).
Oh yeah, and it cost me 50 bucks to getting it programmed on a local dealer

Total cost $2200. Just my suggestion, for those who wants to install it,try to do it yourselves. I tried to ask a local well-known audio shop did it for me (estimate cost was 100 bucks )and waited 3 hours (1.5 hours waiting for my car's turn) before someone told me it can't be done because they don't want to deal with fiber optics cables . I actually watched them trying to peel off the central AC vents with some tools without knowing there are screws inside the vent. They really seem kinda lost not knowing what the first thing to take apart. I should've written a letter to the shop owner.
Anyway,so finally I decided to do it myself, the install wasn't too hard. the only things you need are a flathead screwdriver and a T20 screwdriver (I got it from a local ACE store for $5), and probably a flashlight.
Taking apart the central AC vent is somewhat a pain in the A$$. The rest are easy.
The pics below are the "teeths" from the vent

It was from sammy (deleted by moderator - non sponsor reference). I use the instructions someone posted in this forum previously. Sammy didn't provide any instructions(although he said he would), but he sent me WIS for CLK instead. I guess, even though you get the WIS for C-class, it won't be better than the one posted on this forum (plus colorful pics)

depending on the software settings in the comand and the options of the car - stardiag coding might be needed in order to get it all work (as sunman experienced)...if the comand comes coded without any audio options, it will not activate the fiberring and will not start up audio options (such as the HK amp which then leaves you without sound).
so...stardiag programmingf might definitely be needed in order to get the comand installed succesfully...it depends on the setup of both the car and the comand.
greetingz,
