How cold is your AC?

I am just curious what other people are experiencing with their ACs. I just put a thermometer directly in front of the middle vents of my 2005 C230 with the dials turned to the lowest temperature and the fan speed at 6. The lowest reading I got was 54 degrees F. I am wondering if this is normal or if it should be cooler. In another thread someone said his was blowing at 40 degrees...

Thanks!

It all depends upon the temperature of the air going into the system. AC systems are designed to lower the temperature of the air from the time it goes in, to the time it comes out. The warmer the air going into the system, the higher the temperature coming out (at the lowest setting). That's the reason for recirculation; air that has already been cooled will be cooled down even more.

Try this test, go out at night when the temperature is at it's lowest and measure the temp coming out, and then try again in the middle of the day when the temperature is at it's highest (select "max cool" and manual for the temperature setting).

I live in a climate where the temperature often goes over 100 degrees F, and I've had no problems getting my car to a comfortable driving temperature in a short amount of time.

dude, 54 degrees is pretty damn cold. i love not having digital A/C. i've felt that with all the cars i've had with digital A/C, it wouldn't get cold enough for me (i like it pretty cold). i think the A/C in my C230 is very good. i've been keeping it on 3-4 this past week and it's been comfortable in this 90 + weather. hope this helps

Im with you, all though sometimes I dont like which vents the car chooses. It will blow hard out the dash vents, but nothing out the footwell! My hand (My left hand sits right in front of the left vent) gets so cold it hurts and my feet and legs are sweating! I feel like I'm going to get a Nor' Easter in my stomach!

Oh yeah on a side note... I have concluded that it's not possible to have cloud form in the middle of the car by having the drivers a/c on the coolest and the passengers heat on the hottest. Maybe with the digital?

I think my A/C is turbo'ed or something cause it chills my legs and my arms really fast. And yah the vents are kind of annoying, but with some tweaking it works out

Not sure how the non digital works but on mine, you can set the fan to be Auto, yet set the vents on manual. That way you can have the fan control the temp, yet always have the vent on that you want. Doing it this way will also stop that "cloud" from forming. Again, I'm not sure if you can do this with the non digital.

No, unfortunately that can't be done with the analog CC units. I wish it were possible. It's a nice feature to have. One reason why I'm not a big fan of the 'auto' mode on the analog CC units.

I find "auto" is not as good as dialing in 72 degrees and manually adjusting the fan speed. The air appears much cooler.

I live in Central Florida where the temperature hovers in the 90's and the humidity is in the 80-90% range. When I leave work in the afternoon, the car blows warm air all the way home. I only live 5 miles from work but I can't get the car cool. I keep both temperature dials at the lowest setting (don't have digital) and the fan as high as it will go and still warm air. The only time the car takes forever to cool is when it has been sitting outside all day in the hot sun. I use a reflective screen in the windshield and always put up the rear sunshade. The dealer has checked the AC charge and it is at specs.

I dunno wut's up with all these dif ac problems, i have the 2002 c230 and the ac has always been great, in 60 degree weather or in 90. Maybe it's these new m271 engines sucking up all the air into the engine :p

The inside temperature of the car has a lot to do with how long it will take to cool the car. A car that has been sitting in the sun can be very hot inside. Remember that the seats, dashboard, etc. will absorb heat, and then radiate it back out, so it's more than just replacing the air inside the car to cool it (which should only take a few minutes).

If your car is not blowing cold air within 5 minutes of turning it on, then there is indeed a problem.

although you are putting up the reflective screen and rear sunshade, open the sunroof in the 'up' position and try to park in a sunshade. either way, when you arrive at your car, open all the windows down (i use my remote). set the temp at something you desire, and then put the a/c at full blast. after 1-2 min, you have to lower the fan speed to allow the air to have time to cool down when going through the coils. put the speed around 3-4. put your windows up and enjoy the 3 minutes left in driving home.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do lower all the windows and open the sunroof with the one touch feature (unless it has rained and the sunroof panel is still wet, which tends to happen every day in Central Florida and the reason I can't leave the sunroof in the up position). There is no shade to park under at work. But I will try lowering the fan speed after a few minutes and see if that helps. It's just that I never had this problem with the Chrysler 300M I traded for the C240. It seemed to cool down much faster (and with no rear sunshade to help with interior temperature).
