I just got my key replaced with the new style (under warantee), I had a crack on the locking button. Of course the dealer said that it was wear and tear but I showed them it is a design fault because the area is too large and too thin for the internal button (which is too stiff) and over time if you don't press directly on the middle the pressure but slightly to the side it will cut into the plastic. actually it is quite a bad design if I say so. I am supprised that they just don't replace/sell the shells and slide in the internals.
They agreed and now my new key weighs about a pound
The new key does look substantial, however the chrome will certainly scratch up over time and look well worn...not to mention the odd drop on the floor. But it does look richer, maybe it will help my case in the bars!

fit the gen3 (chrome) Smartkey quite well and does keep the nicks and
scratches to a minimum. It is not a perfect fit because it was sized for
gen2 instead of gen3 key

DO THEY TAKE IN YOUR OLD KEY BEFORE REPLACING IT?????, or do they just look at the current key and then order you the new one? I'm wondering if the dealerships will test the current key to see if it works on the car.

what were you going to do? order an old key on eBay and then take it to the dealer?

The only reason is b/c those *******s refuse to reprogram the key. I'm stubborn as hell about it and just can't believe that an electronic key cannot be reprogrammed. I just think they refuse to do it. But thanks for the reply...superquick by the way. quit it with the yelling. this is the second time. mature tone of voice please. this is a mercedes forum.

I think you're the one that needs to be more mature. do you want to argue or cry about things? give me a break. "this is a mercedes forum"? um yeah, then why don't you search and figure out things for yourself rather than asking to be spoon fed each time and take offense when someone doesn't give you the answer you want.

this was not the second time. yelling? I was poking fun of your initial question in which you're the one who put things in all caps.

No one's whining. I just expected a bit more from Mercedes. I could be wrong, but still not convinced about the keys not being able to be reprogrammed. One guy from a different forum claims he got it done.

It cannot / will not be done, period. Time to give up on the subject and move on. The key subject has been covered a tousand times here and the answer is always the same. Key not VIN matched to your car NO WORKY!

I have the three bttn key that I needed to replace so I ordered one today for $167.00. (Bad sensors I think)
I faxed my VIN #, registration and drivers liscence to the Dealer in San Luis Obispo, CA. No need to take car in on this one. pick up key in couple days.
Mercedes 1998 c230
The key is supposed to be able to activate itself when inserted.
praying to the ignition gods....

Got my new key today. It is the one with the silver sides and it is DOPE! I didnt even specify any certain model #.
Plugged it in and the car strated . I am stoked. all doors and trunk locked and unlocked.
Best 167 I ever spent!
