Help! 05 C230 Winter Tires + Rims (Tried Searching)

Hi everyone. I realize that this has probably been discussed to death, and yes I've searched the forum, and yes I know winter is somewhat off. But there are some good off season tire specials going on in my area and I could really use your guys help.

I've decided on the Bridgestone Blizzacks LM-25s as the snow tire I will use. So what I need help on is should I change my rims? The cheapest new set of rims that they had at the Firestone store were a set of 17'' alloy rims for $550. They were decent rims - but honestly for the winter I don't care what my rims look like. I want the cheapest most garbage rims I can get! (Mostly cause the winter sucks in CT and the chance of skidding into a curb is pretty great.)

What options do I have for basic rims? I know I need at least 17'' to clear the calipers in the car... do any other Mercedes models fit? Could I goto the junk yard and find a set off an older c320/230/240 or some other car? Are there cheaper steel rims available over alloys? Should I even bother getting a whole new set of Rims? What is the meaning of life?

Anyway, thanks for your H-E-L-P-F-U-L respones guys!!

k lundquist, here are some suggestions. Post your question in the wheel and tire forum here in MBWorld. Call The Tire Rack or just visit www.tirerack.com and ask them your question.
Visit these forums http://www.snowtire.info/forum/

Ask the dealership what rims will fit the car. You can often find OEM rims on eBay.

I doubt that they make a 17 inch steel rim for your car though. Good luck and let us know what you learn.

Have you considered the Nokian tire that is an all-season tire that is rated for severe winter conditions as a year round tire? http://www.nokiantires.com/newsite/tiresub.cfm?cid=6

Ebay, the Classified, and MBKlasse are good sources for used rims. Cheaper is better for winter. The original design stock C240 rims are dirt cheap, and because they are so dull looking, easy to come buy.

Except those 16" won't clear the front brakes on his car. :p

I live in Wisconsin, so I've been through this drill several times, twice with a Mercedes and with some other cars as well.
I recommend watching the classified section here. Quite often guys will upsize their wheels and sell the 17" OEM rims and tires. You can often get the rims plus some OEM tires (which aren't cheap) at a decent price, and since they're M-B wheels, you know they'll be right.
Good luck!

Sounds good, thanks for the information guys. I guess the best idea would be to get another full set of snow tires than just switching the tread on the OEMs twice a season.
