Strange AC Problem

My 04 C320 AC has been acting very strange. 3 times now in the last few weeks when I leave work the AC doesn't even blow. The display shows appears as if everything is working. It is on auto and I can hit the fan buttons to vary fan speed on the display, but no fans blow at all -- nothing. Each time after about 5 minutes of driving the system begins working. All of a suddon the fans come on, the air is cold, and all is well.
Nothing I do to the system seems to have any effect, and I'm thinking some type of electrical problem since once the system turns itself on, it works fine.

Anyone have any thoughts before I take it in to the dealer? I want to get as much info as I can, since this intermittent problem is bound to get a "cannot reproduce problem -- system working normally" response from my dealer unless I can give some guidance.
Thanks for any input.

Solution

Well, since I didn't get any feedback here on this problem, thought I'd share the dealer's diagnosis and solution with the board so other members may benefit in the event they experience this problem as well.

The culprit causing the AC air flow to go out on occasion ended up being a defective AC blower motor regulator, fixed under warranty.

Interesting because I just experienced that for the first time this past weekend.

The only reason I noticed it was because I was on my way to San Diego, had my AC on and all of a sudden it just stopped blowing air completely. No fan or anything. My solution was to turn it off and then back on and it would start working again, but good thing you posted this.

I thought I was just imagining things.

Thanks for sharing your experience, r_liebo. I imagine you didn't get any responses initially because we have not heard of this problem before. Not a lack of interest.

I'll concur with that too, MB-BOB...until, of course, I experienced it this weekend. Thank God I'm coming up on my Service B.

Sounds like that is the case. Perhaps there are also those that experience the symptoms not thinking anything was wrong -- I didn't think too much of it myself since the problem seemed to correct itself until it happened a 3rd time, and was fully prepared for my dealer being unable to find any problem.
Have to give credit to RBM Atlanta for finding and fixing the problem. Too bad they've been doing that a lot with my car in my 16 months of ownership.

1st me, now drexappeal have experienced this. If we get enough we can move this from the "rare" to "common" problem category!

r_liebo, do you by any chance have the "specific" fix information that they indicated on the Invoice. I'm trying to compile all the things I can have them fix, since I'm going into Service B sometime within the next few weeks.

If you could provide me with that, it'd be great!

Thanks in advance.

I'll try and post it tomorrow. Car is still at the dealer (ironically, getting service B done myself).

Here you go.
Not sure exactly what you need so, Ii'm listing what is on the invoice

" 838353 "Electronic Blower Motor Regulator Replacement"
903

19387 Defective Blower Speed Regulator funciton check blower motor and verified customer complaint. Short test performed using S/D/s, code in CAAC # B1460 A32N1 blower regulator checked voltage to blower regulator, checked OK. Right rear blower motor replaced regulator for intermitttent operation cleared all codes, road tested and checked OK"

Hope your AC stays working until you can get it fixed (then again, if you are spending time in San Diego, you might not ever need the AC -- or the heater for that matter!).

r liebo,

Since you had the same problem and you gave me the exact information that was stated on the invoice. They did the same exact fix. They replaced the blower motor regulator!

I didn't really experience the same problem after I last posted about this, but still have better "peace-of-mind" that it shouldn't happen again (or at least anytime soon).

Glad you were able to get it fixed. I actually hadn't had the problem for several weeks either when I got mine fixed, but you just never know when it could happen again. Here in Atlanta I'll be needing my AC some at least through October, and the wind-buffeting in my car with the windows down sort of eliminates that option if the AC were to decide not to work again.

I talked to the service guy a bit about this problem, and he said it isn't one of the most common C-class issues, but he had seen several cars afflicted.

I just realized you have a 4.5 also...Maybe some sort of connection with this type of problem? Who knows, but thanks again, regardless.

No problems since they fixed it, right?

mine has the same prob described. i'm having service A done at 49,980 miles, my last 'free' service. i do not have invoice info yet since it is in for other various repairs that i will post later up (especially about the paint problem i had posted in this forum, which nobody responded, but probably because no one else had the problem....yet).

My 2005 C320 has developed this problem also

First visit to dealer was a waste of time to fix intermitent A/C fan. It didn't do it when they had the car. So they just gave it back saying they could not verify the problem.

Car is doing it again so it looks like another trip back.

Same deal back in May, no one had this issue at that time. I never fixed it as of this thread. I just called the dealer and I'm going to pick up the part afterwork today.

Add me to the list of people with this problem. Mine started probably around the 50k mark. Usually happens when the car has been sitting in the sun (when I need the A/C the most).

Thanks for posting the fix on here. I have been searching for a solution.

Update

well on my way to wotk I had the A/C on a low setting in manual, and it cut out for 30 seconds then came on again. This is the first time this has happened since I changed out the Electronic Blower Motor Regulator. Now I'm puzzled. I guess I'm going to leave it alone until it completely fails. I do not believe the fan is bad.

Back from the second visit to the dealer for the same problem - this time I printed out this thread and gave it to them suggesting they look at the blower regulator. They took me a little more seriously this time than last and performed some diagnostics - what a surprise, blower regulator is bad.

Regulator replaced.

how to get the blower regulator? online shop??

Is there anyone know how to get the blower regulator?
any cheap online shop?
and what about the price?
I called dealer and they told me $400..gosh!!
I have had this issue since last week. After reading lots of forums,
I assumed that the blower regulator is malfunction. :-(

Thanks a lot for any suggestion.
Mine is 2003 C200K
