DVD vs CD Nav

I know I know, it’s a dumb question, but hear me out. Have never seen any of these Nav setups so don’t know anything. And I did search, got some information but not what I was looking for.

Now for the question, what is the difference between DVD and CD Nav, any graphic difference, any added options??? Of course the DVD one will be better, but just wanted to know if there is not much difference may be I can save $1500 and get the CD nav. And how hard is the installation, and how much it costs?

And lastly will C-230 CD Nav fits C-320 sedan, both 2002 models...

2005 + = DVD nav
2004.5 - = CD nav

Any questions?

I have had both in my car and the truth is that there is not much of a difference except for the visual difference and larger screen. Both will get you where you need to go. Most people don't travel cross country so changing cd's is no big deal. DVD is a larger screen with more map info and also a higher resolution screen. DVD system on the C cannot have TV in motion where as the older cd systems can have tv in motion. Both can accept a SAT tuner depending which comand you get. Everything else is pretty much the same. Voice control is more sophiscated in the DVD comand.

Comand can't reject burned CDs

I got a Euro Comand and now it's not playing burned CDs and is having lots of trouble ejecting them too. I'd have to sit there and press the eject button 10+ times before the disc will pop out.

I asked the dealer and they told me the Comand doesn't play burned CDs and that it's having problems ejecting them because they're thicker. Is this true?

I took the same burned CDs and used them on another car CD player. Worked just fine. Either the Mercedes Comand really SUCK, or it's malfuctioning?

Anyone else with Euro Comands having this problem?

burned CDs will have a lot more reading errors as original discs have...on DVD comands (no matter wether it has an external DVD nav drive or integrated nav drive in the dash) one can actually ruin the nav drive with a copied disc that has a croocked file - that is even worse then with CD rom based comands.

Eject is subject to the finish of the topside of the CD..the eject rollers do not have enough grip on some finishes...if the CD doesn't eject right away - you can simply press the disc down with your credit card while it is ejecting.
The older a CD rom comand gets - the more dust accumulates onto the rubber rolers and that results in less succesfull ejecting of the disc.

Thats wht I was lookig for.....thanks sunman....I was just wondering if DVD will have alot of other features, but if it is just lil better resolution, I think I can live without that and get a CD nav. Plus I stay mostly in Tri-State area, so I think 1 CD will be enough for me....

The thing is, depending on what MY (Model Year) car you have, that will determine if you can even get DVD nav in your car at all.

In your first post, you stated both cars are 2002 MY. In that case, DVD navigation is NOT compatible, unless of course you're as crazy as Sunman and do a whole bunch of changes just to retro-fit the MOST system into your car. The MOST system came stock as of 2005 - present.

That's why Sunman says that he's had BOTH in his car, but if you search on the boards, I'm sure you'll find the multiple postings of how much work was necessary for him to change everything (almost literally).

as drexappeal said Getting DVD or CD is not an option for most people. 2001-2004 = CD based. 2005 and later = DVD based.

The burned CDs played in all other CD roms, including other MB loaners. It used to read them now it's just not.

greetingz,
That's strange, because I've always had the Comand CD in the CD slot. I've hardly ever used a burned CD. So how can it get dirty?

just like every other single CD rom comand: because of the FAN that sits inside the drive and sucks air in through the CD slot

Sunman, you crazy OEM mod fanatic, what's next now that you seem to be on the right track with all the programming.

The keyless go working okay? Man, despite all the $$$ that must be going into your projects, I'm sure it's all pretty fun to play around with the different functions...especially because it's all OEM.
