Brake Lining Wear!

Ok guys... i already ordered my Porterfield pads and rotors... b/c i knew that i was going to need brakes soon. The day after ordering my instrument cluster decides to tell me to visit the workshop because of brake lining wear... i cleared the malfunction and it comes right back... any way to keep it off??? I get my porterfields like in 10 days... but it really annoys me having to drive with that on. If i can't take it off... i'm just gonna drive my '89 560 sl for the next week. another thing.. when i install the new pads and rotors, am i going to have to go to the dealer to reset the brake malfunction... or will it do it on it's own?? thanks guys

I haven't had to replace my pads yet, but I think you will need to get a brake wear sensor for each corner. These are cheap. When you replace the pads, change to brake wear sensors. Unfortunately, Porterfield is currently using backing plates which do not have the fitting for the sensor. You will need to tape the sensor to something to keep it out of harms way. It is the sensor which prevents the brake malfunction warning from coming on. Remember, you will now need to visually inspect the pads, since you will get no malfunction warning.

I'd have the dealer install the pads and see what he says abou the sensor...

I believe the 'sensor' is nothing more than a closed loop in plastic that opens when the plastic and wire wears through from the pad disappearing.
If you are putting Porterfield pads in you don't need a new sensor...just splice the two ends together from the old sensor near the plug that goes into the caliper carrier. Haven't done this myself, but would if the situation presented itself.
