You took your electronics and put them in the housing that you got on eBay? If this is what you did it should work. If your electronics don't work after the swap you might have damaged something.

Just to be clear, the electronics that came with the eBay key will never work in your car.

I did damage it. You were right. One of the pieces, an ir transmitter, I think, at the insertion end, broke its soldering. I super glued it back on and will solder it once the glue dries. The part does not look to have been damaged. If I can't fix it, I'll have to buy another key. In the future, I'll have to be more carefull. At least I now know what not to do in the future and to be more careful.

I'm worried that if it do repair it, that it might break again and leave me stranded if I don't have a spare key on me. what do you think?

Sorry to hear that it got messed up. Just make sure to get a good solder and you should be OK. I always carry a spare smartkey with me at all times. A friend of mine had 2 keys go fubar and they had never been cracked open. Good luck with everything.

RIP

I killed the key. Maybe I should have left well enough alone. Anyone think I can convince the dealer that my key just died and get them to swap it

Yes.
I've done that twice to get a new key FOB with the trunk button for my Coupé.
I won't say here, how I got the key to "not work", but it's not that hard.
And so, got one key at a time replace under warranty.
If they replace your key FOB, by the way (Coupé owners, pay attention), you will get the new series key FOB with the trunk button.

For the Coupé, pressing on the trunk button, will only unlock and slighty (very slightly) raise the hatch. It will not POP UP like the sedan trunk, because the Coupé rear hatch is very very heavy compared to the C-Sedan trunk lid.

I have dealt with this issue already - you need to provide dealer registration, copy of your license. I purchased mine through www.sunmotorcars.com and ask for parts (specifically Chris) - tell him you saw them on these boards! I got it for $125 including the blade insert. I don't get a % of anything, but I told him that his prompt service would get recommended and they have been great! Visit the website for toll free number.

Where do you live? I bought my Coupe from Sun Motors!

2005 C320 -Sports package - black / black
When I got my new key, they ordered it, called me and had me come down to pick it up. When I got their I was pissed when I was told I could be stuck their for up to 4 hours. Luckily it only took 30 seconds.
