Black smoke??

A friend has an '03 240 wagon that belched black smoke two different times on the same trip, 100 miles between, while going uphill at about 75 mph. Both times he stopped and checked under the hood, and car, and oil level from the monitor. No problems. The back window, bumper, and tailgate were covered with what looked like oil droplets when they got home. Dealer says NTF. Anyone have similar problem or have any ideas?

you better check if the oil filter is loose because the same thing happened to my boy with his ford escape. there was a lot of grease all over the rear bumper and rear windshield and they found out the dealer had the oil filter loose.

the black smoke i think would be a new head gasket needed because it could be burning oil, but you checked the oil level and it was fine so.

Black smoke is too much fuel.
White is water and blue is oil.

Black smoke can happen if you hit the gas hard. You will get a burst of black smoke as the car increases the amount of fuel in the mixture faster than the card can burn it.

Its burning Diesel or what???!!!
I don't know in petrol engines, but normally they don't do any smoke, only when they have tuned up engines, when stock and if its a recent car (less than 10 years) they don't do any smoke or only when there is some problems.

I agree with black=fuel, white=water and blue = oil but that's what he saw. For oil to be spattered in droplets on the back of the car that probably means it came through the exhaust. Could the charcoal cannister have dumped a load of fuel right at that time if the purge valve stuck open? (I'm not sure how that works). He was just cruising and not passing or anything. We're talking a BIG cloud of black smoke not just a puff or small stream. Enough to fill the rear view mirrors and pull over to check things out.

Im a tranny tech and i have seen tons of oil on the back of the cars. Mine normally comes in for tranny leaks. But im sur eit could be engine oil leaks too. If there is drops all over the rear then its not comming from the exhaust. And the smoke is cause wehn what even fluid is leaking hits the exhaust then burns. If you lift the car you can tell where the fluid is hitting the exhaust. And if trannys or engines are over full that could cause this too. But bottom line you got a leak of some fluid hitting the exhaust and the windws blowing out the rear and all over the back of your car and the people behind you. Have it checked out.
