C350 rear diff

I read that the new C350 uses a numerically lower rear differential than the C320, SLK and first year C240 and C230. This means the run to 60 only takes two gears now. (FINALLY!!!!)

Not having to grab another gear saves about .5 seconds or so to 60.

Anybody know if this is refittable to old MY cars? Given how fragile the old ones are, I think a C350 rear diff might be a better replacement.

Doesn't the amount of gears required to hit 60 also have to do with the power an engine produces? I have limited knowledge in this field, so i'm also wondering what are the negative effects of doing this? Otherwise this sounds like a pretty interesting idea

Power

The power of the engine will not change. Where on the power curve of engine performance will change.

It begets the question, what happens to the transmission shift program when the wheel speed sensors do not make sense to it, vis vis engine RPM, Transmission Gear, Wheel Speed.

I would think that you would have to make changes in other places to optimize that layout. If this is true then maybe the control module from a 350 transmission would have the proper shift points.

Any comments?

While not having to shift into third will save you some time 0-60, I feel with the power we have in these cars it may be a wash going to a numerically lower gear. It would be nice for first gear to be more useful and would make the 1-2 shift easier, smoother and a lot more comfortable, and definately nice to hit 60 in 2nd. If I recall, at least on the M271, 60 isn't far from 2nd, I think redline is some where in the 50-55mph range. If thats so, we wouldn't need much of a change. (what are the gear ratios for the different models? Anybody know the gear ratios for the 6MT too?) How easy is it to recalibrate the car for the different gear set?

In a practical sense, yes 0-60 times would be faster, but the time to a distance will be slower, which isnt very practical when trying to merge onto a parkway or pass. Although RPM will drop giving better mileage!

(Now try and figure out if I'm for this or against it! )
