Part Number for the Motion Sensor Unit

<btw, I did search>

Does anyone have the part number for the motion sensor unit that mounts in the ceiling of the car?

From what I understand, there should be a modular plug under the headliner for the unit to plug into. I understand that I would have to cut the headliner to install this.

Does the part number vary with the trim package? eg, does it change depending upon the color of the headliner?

yes I did write something about it. The standard part number for the sedan stays the same except for the last 4 digits which is the color code. You have to run a 3 pin harness to the front OVERHEAD CONTROL MODULE. This is located above the sunroof buttons. Version coding is required as well

...and then there is the steel framework that goes in the hole-to-cut as the IMS does not stick to the ceiling by itself...then there is a wire harness that is a huge hassle to run when your car has a sunroof...and then there is the NEED to reprogram the car as the IMS does not function by itself...and then there is the dash switch row that has to be swapped out in order to be able to swithc the IMS off when locking the car (if needed)...and then there is the skill to cut a headliner without ruining it...and then there is that moment where you are trying to get that IMS to clip into its framework

in short: good luck

Okey, so it's not going to be as simple as I thought. Thanks for the info.

Does Mercedes make a template for cutting the headliner in the correct position for the interior motion sensor?

Is there a part number for the harness needed? Or do you need to crimp your own? Is there a part number for the steel frame?

I often need to sneak wires into blind tricky places. I use a very flexible fiberglass rod (familar to those who install cat5 cables in existing buildings) with a chunk of steel on the tip. When the rod is inserted into the headliner, I use a magnet on my side to guide the tip around objects like the sunroof.

I got a tip from a Dutchman working in a Malaysian car factory for installing plastic assemblies with barb fittings. He would wipe a finger "wetted" with lanolin over the sliding surface of the barb. Worked well, and the lanolin, unlike vasoline, does not go rancid or move from where you apply it. Would work great to install the motion sensor in the metal frame.

Installing

I can see how it would be a pain in the a$$ to install. I have a sunroof and there doesn't appear to be alot of wiggle room between the headliner and the roof.

I had to replace my antenna on a '92 Passat. To do that I had to drop the back end of the headliner. I got scraped up and ended up with a loose flap of fabric on the headliner material. Fortunately I have access to the spray adhesives that they use to put the material down with and I was able to repair it. I really do not look forward to a repeat experience.

Who wouldn't want a Coupé ?

That thread has tons and tons of good info.... Too much of it is now burried in there, as the thread has gotten longer and longer....
Lots of DIY jobs, lots of part #'s, lots of Coupé only retrofits and mods.
and my favorite: tons of pics !

Glad I was able to find this thread. Okay, so I followed Carlos' links to get the part numbers, but now that Mike is no longer in So-Cal, I really don't have many options of people that have done this install themselves. I just bought the IMS (still need the bracket and harness) from ebay and plan on putting this on.

It's not an urgent project, but if anybody in So-Cal has done this before or can refer me to a shop that can do it for me, please let me know. Carlos' step-by-step is for the coupe, so I'm figuring there'll be slight differences with my sedan.

TIA, everybody.
