I think there are a number of people that drive a C-Class simply because that is what they prefer, not because they cannot afford any more. In my case the C-Class is nearly the perfect size, and it is available with a manual transmission. My concerns over fuel led me to buy the four cylinder C230K over the six cylinder versions (not to mention the "Kompressor" label on the trunk lid).
I do not share the belief of most Americans that bigger is better. I travel a lot in Europe, and think most vehicles there are more reasonably sized.
As to the young adult market, I think this a market Mercedes desperately needs to pursue. They are the future customers. MB is already starting to steal some customers from BMW and Audi, which I believe is their target market. IMO the C230 is very competitive with the 325i and the A4. The standard 6 speed manual transmission indicates MB is serious about the sport sedan market.

Lease on the Volvo.
I bought my C32. I scewed myself with a lease (too many miles) once and decided to buy from that point forward. My company gives me a generous car allowance + gas and expenses
