Car turns off while driving! Help.

I am posting this for my cousin. I searched the archives with no luck. She was driving on the freeway and the car shut off, power steering off and her warning lights would flash. She had to turn the car off then back on and all was fine. It happened 3 or 4 times yesterday and dealer said everything looks fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I'll even get her to take a picture with her car for thanks.

Don't listen to the dealer saying everything is fine, if the cars has turned off multiple times you tell them to do their damn jobs right. I hate it how the service for MB's nowadays just keep saying they can't find the problem when there clearly is! Such things can be very difficult and i don't understand how a dealer can simply say that they couldn't find anything wrong...

This happened to me once with my 1999 E320. Was driving up hill on a long driveway, approximately 5-10 mph. Car shut off, no power steering, all lights went on. Brake didn't even work and the car was rolling backward, had to use parking brake.Took about 2 minutes to restart the car.

Took it to the dealer, they said the exact same thing, "Car is fine". The reason why the car is fine, because the computer in the car recorded no such incident because the computer wasn't operating at the time the car shut off. I guess that's what we get for owning German cars. LOL

I had that problem with my ML, by the way what car does she have...ok this was done to my ML....

replaced the key ignition thing (where u put ur keys in) does she have her car keys with a bunch of other keys? if so, it might be too heavy and loosened the ignition thing..

replaced motor mounts

my cars running fine now, hope that helps =]

Exclamation Complete Shut-off!

This is the cousin...My car was perfectly fine before everything happened. I just had Service A and an inspection done on Wednesday at the dealership and then on Sunday on my way back from Houston to San Antonio the car just shut-off! I had no control over the car and all the lights went off! I couldn't stear the car and the brakes did not work! It was VERY scarry b/c I was on the freeway in the far left lane! I finally took the key out and put it back in and the car started back up again with no problems. This happened twice more and the last time it took several tries of taking the key out and placing back in until it worked. The dealer says everything is fine...I don't beleive them b/c I know it happened and I'm afraid it might happen again! Please help!

Ok umm do u hang ur car keys along with a bunch of ther keys?
If so for now put only ur car key in when driving, next time if this happens, pul over and call roadside, and if there's no brakes u can still jam on it and u just gota apply more force, u can still slow down.

To my experience u need to replace ur ignitions starter, write or call mbusa and have someone check it.

When it hapened for me, I was on i278 in brooklyn.ny a busy 3 lane hwy that everyones 1 car space away driving 60mph+ I wooda died if it wasn't for the shoulder =T

Any other advice?

Single key without any others...I hadn't yet put my keys back on from when it was in service.

I'll ask them about the ignition starter, motor mounts, and MFA sensors. Anything else?

Probably totally unrelated, but this happened to me in my old 95 Caddy Fleetwood. Took it to the dealer and said everything was fine. Went to a private mechanic and it turned out it was the fuel pump SHORTING OUT and the ECU was shutting the car down to prevent it from igniting. Funny thing is it hapened about 6 times and I would just start it up again and drive off. Go figure.

i know a guy that has had this happen in a CL55, SL55, and an E55. all three times the dealer bought the car back and he picked out another. after the E he ended up with an SL600 and everything is fine. all this happened last year, so it could have been 2004 or 2005 models.

you can stilll steer fine its just that the brakes harden, just like how when you shut ur car off, the brakes are ok, then it stiffens up
