I get great distance... or used to at least.

I don't know how far this is, but I put my phone right up against the glass to take this pic. I was just amazed at how far the remote worked. Keep in mind, I was on the 3rd floor of a building and my car was that far away. This was taken last year when my car was only a few months old...

it depends on battery life... whenever i change the battery it can reach really far.. now my batteries are running low again so i have to be within like 3 or 4 car lengths away

Ok, here's something I learned, and it works. It sounds crazy, but it works. Find out how far your remote works and then stand just out of range. Verify that it does not work. Now touch the remote to your head (yes, that's right, your head) and try again. You'll find that it does indeed work! You'll get a little more distance out of it by doing this.

I remember MB-BOB and I trying this out, standing just outside the pro shop at a golf course. Neither of our fobs worked normally, but they both worked when we touched them to our heads and pressed the button.

really really dumb question... how do i change the battery on the remote? I've actually not had to do this yet... which may explain why i get such horrible range (yeah i was just thinking about how the range seems to be decreasing just ever so slowly but i thought it was just my perception)!

It sounds like the battery is not making proper contact with the terminal. I've had this happen before too. Easy fix though: Remove the batter, bend the little contact plate (the springy piece of metal that contacts the battery), and replace the battery. I've had to do this twice in 4 years.

I'm not sure if they've changed the design (mine is a 2002), but.... If you pull out the metal key from the fob, there is a little button that you can push (you can use the tip of the metal key for this) which opens up the fob. Before replacing the battery, check the contact plate (see my earlier post in this thread). The batteries are long life, so unless you are locking and unlocking your car many times per day, it should last for years.

My remote works weired sometimes. One time i was at a hotel, about 20 stories up, and i can still unlock/lock my car while my car is around 200meter from the building. And one time i was at school, i can't even unlock my car while my car is about 20feet from me, and i just changed the batteries too.

how you guys' IR range? Lock / unlock / trunk are all RF but closing and opening the windows is IR (I believe this is correct, not positive). IR doesnt work unless I'm about 3 feet away and, even then, it sometimes doesnt work. I wish that there were a way to lower my windows as I walk up to the car

IR is only supposed to work at close distances. It's made to open/close windows & sunroof as you are standing right outside the car.

ah okay, too bad. Of course, that is a limitation of IR itsself (and it's much worse on hot days). But, it should be possible to modify it so that you can use RF I think... maybe not easy or practical but there must be a way.

I'm going to have to find one of those CD's with the workshop manual and everything... I bet I could do it, I have a lot of technical expertise when it comes to electronics
