Bing, I have no personal experience with Amsoil and do not sell their products so I have no vested interest. I have been using Mobil1 0W-40 because it had been available at a local Wal-Mart for about $4.50 a quart when I stocked up on it. The prices have risen quite a bit since then.

Of course you can use Amsoil 5W-40; it meets MB 229.5 which is their latest spec.
See this list which has often been quoted.
http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

jasonla, you can use any oil that meets MB 229.3 or 229.5. Buy yourself an extra quart so you will have top off oil in case you need it.

You could check with Wal-Mart, Autozone, Pepboys to see if they will order Mobil 1 0W-40, Castrol Syntec 0W-30 ( the German ACEA A3 oil, not the American version of Syntec 0W-30), or the Belgian Castrol Syntec 5W-40 for you.

But since you are going to have to order your filters, see what is available.
I have seen pretty good filter prices here www.allgermanparts.com

Feeling French? You could order up Elf oil that meets 229.3 available here.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ELF-O...temZ8022926564

If you look online, I am sure you can find a Motul supplier.

You could take your lack of local supply as an opportunity to indulge in boutique oils if you have the money to spend.

Alternatively, if you don't have the money to spend, you could use a bone stock conventional SM oil in the correct grade for your climate and just do 6 month 5k mile oil changes. No, it won't meet MB's higher specs, but I believe that the higher spec ACEA A3 oils are for conditions that are not replicated in the US outside of running the car on a race track (i.e. running the car flat out on the autbahn for hours). If you change the oil every 6 months, you don't have to meet the MB long life specs. You could then run a used oil analysis just to be sure everything is ok; I use Blackstone Labs.

If you want to learn more about motor oil, do a Google search for the term BITOG.

i got free oil change until the year 2010

this site is very informative:

http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

AMSOIL is there:

MB sheet 229.5 approved oils; "MB Longlife Service Oils"
for passenger cars with gas and diesel engines with extended drain intervals beyond 229.3 oils, to 30,000 km, min 1.8% fuel saving, first oils introduced summer 2002. For gas engines of the M100 series, gas engines of the M200 series and diesel engines of the OM600 series (not models with Euro 4 diesel particle filters).
229.5 engine oils must be used with fleece oil filter designed for use with 229.5 engine oils.

AGIP Formula LL DC 5W-30 (I)
Amsoil Synthetic 5W-40 European Engine Oil (USA)
Aral SuperTronic G 5W-30 (D)
Aral SuperTronic M 5W-30 (D)

AMSOIL History http://www.amsoil.com/company.aspx

First to develop an API-rated 100 percent synthetic motor oil.
First to introduce the concept of "extended drain intervals" with a recommended 25,000-mile/1-year drain interval.
First U.S. company to utilize the NOACK volatility test as a standard of performance excellence.
First to produce synthetic motor oils for diesel engines, racing engines, turbo and marine engines.
First to introduce synthetic oils that legitimately contribute to improving fuel efficiency.
First to manufacture synthetic gear lube for automotive use.
First to manufacture a 100:1 pre-mix synthetic 2-cycle oil.
First to manufacture a synthetic automatic transmission fluid for automotive use.

In short AMSOIL was the pioneer , product research and development of synthetic oil then every major oil company made them too.

I've been using AMSOIL in my boat and older german cars and very satisfied with it from cold starts. Mobil gave me hard starting.

thanks

If you are getting the free oil changes at the dealership following the FSS, just make sure they use M1 0W-40 which is what they are typically using anyways. If anything, the knock on this particular M1 is that it really is a 0W-35 oil and that it is a bit thin. The pour point for this M1 is really low. You won't be having any cold start problems related to the use of M1 0W-40. For the extended drains, it shears down to a 30W oil and then gradually starts thickening up; at least that is what it is supposed to do.

Not a dumb question. The oil container usually lists all of the specs it meets. If they jump throught the hoops to meet VW/MB/BMW/GM long life specs, they are usually proud to advertise that fact.
This link leads to a nice review of an oil change on an E320 W210.
http://www.mbnz.org/gallery/showlink...20Oil%20Change

The first picture shows the back of a Mobil 1 container stating it meets 229.5

If you are handy at all, with a couple of ramps and some tools you can do your own oil change. You could also get one of the suction devices and do an oil change completely from the top of the car.

Amsoil

Yes Mobil1 is good but...

"AMSOIL European Car Formula 5W-40, engineered with advanced AMSOIL synthetic technology, is the ONLY motor oil in North America to be recommended for the latest specifications of all three major European automakers – Volkswagen (Audi), BMW and Mercedes-Benz, as well as the latest North American API specification."

I have been a very satisfied AMSOIL consumer for years.

I have been a AMSOIL user for several years. AWESOME oil. Their synthetic tranny fluid makes your gears shift like they're on butter.

Yes, I imagine it does look suspicious. However, I just took delivery of a 2006 C230 (and thus just joined the forum) and was quoting Amsoil's qualifications regarding it's oil for MB. I did not start a "thread" pushing Amsoil (or bash other brands), just replied to threads inquiring about oil. Oh, and one more thing...I don't sell Amsoil.
