Questions about C7 package

For all those who have driven C230's with and without the C7 package, is the linkage different on the shifter with the C7 package.

Official literature says that the shifter is just leather wrapped. One poster in another thread said that he looked it up and the linkage was different.

If this is correct, and I have no reason to doubt it is, what is the difference in the feel of the transmission. Are the throughs shorter? I have heard reviewers criticize the long throughs of the C Coupe. Myself, I don't give a damn what they say, I love the 6th gear!

hello, good to know I'm not the only bugeater on this board... and it was my thread re: the shifter, sounds like it might be OK afterall.

and dude, the stock shifter is "mediocre" as a whole and "poor" considering the class of vehicle and the competition. I am continually amazed by people that say its "OK" every time i try to drive one i get nausious and want to hork up lunch... it just ruins any sporting intentions. but to each his own... I assume you have a 6-speed C230??? how long have you had it and did MB-Omaha knock anything off the price (my mom just bought an ML320 there... might be some good leverage)

C7 = Evolution?

The C7 package available in the U.S. sounds exactly like the Evolution package available in most other countries. Since MBZ isn't documenting the different manual shift linkage in C7, I wonder if they're also not documenting the stiffer suspension which slightly lowers the car.

The C7'd coupe I saw at the San Francisco auto show even had the "Evolution"-embroidered floor mats.

My car with C7 definitely has a different shifter. It is less vague and the throws are shorter. I wouldn't call it great or even good, but it is adequate. I enjoy the 6 speed more than I enjoyed to auto I had for 75 days. That was the best auto I have ever driven.

My car seems to have a difference in the clutch or clutch linkage also. The engagement point is higher and less abrupt.

hmmm...interesting
My non-c7 has a very short throw, thats crisp from gear to gear. I only had to 'acclimate' my driving style to the 6-4 downshift, which seemed a little vague at first.

I wonder if I got a different linkage because of production dates...or if I was desensitized by driving my "old tech" MG's all summer...

FYI, I have a 2002 C240, and the clutch engagement is definitely improved over the 2001 testers I drove (2 of them). I think we previously verified that they made a change for 2002. But, Lynn, which manual are you comparing yours to -- another C230? Since the C230 started as a 2002 model, I wonder if they made an early production change on that as well. I wonder if your observation is related to C7, or a coincidence?

MarkL, I was comparing my car with C7 to a non-C7 demo I drove twice for a total of about an hour.

Actually. . .

Im transplanted here in Nebraska from St. Louis Mo. But I guess when in Rome. . .

Omaha MB gave me a little over $500 off of list, I really tried for a free CD changer. lol The first person I met at the dealership was the General Manager Joe, believe it or not.

My C230/black/6sp/oyster/C1/C4/C5/C7/CD is scheduled to be built the last weekend of January. Until then I am driving a 96 Chevy Corsica (got me though law school) so you see, its not hard for anything to be an improvement over the clunker Im driving now. LOL

which firm do you work for? my dads a partner at Woods & Aitken in Lincoln... I'm guessing you went to creighton, so you konw Colin Mangrum, yes?

my mom just bought an ML320 at MB of Omaha (as referenced earlier) and she got about $2000 off IIRC, are you trading the corsica???

I'm finishing my BBA at UN-L with a double in Finance and Marketing and my '92 integra almost got me through undergrad...

Im a Patent Attorney at

Suiter & Associates. I went to Notre Dame Law School not Creighton, although my father-in-law teaches there and I guest lecture for the Patent Law course a couple of times a year. I don't know Colin Mangrum, sorry.

I wouldn't mind trading the '96 Corsica. I don't know if MB Omaha wants anything to do with it though. I may try to sell it outright. Its in pretty good condition, but it is a 6-year old GM product.
