Here's what I know: for a manny, you have to pry the base of the boot from the center console area (making sure not to scratch anything). Once you do that, you'll be able to feel a ball-type thing underneath the knob; turn that counterclockwise (as seen from above) to loosen. Then the knob should just pop off (might be a little work to get it to come off).

Don't know if that's the same for an auto or not; don't know which you have. But, that's the way that I have been told is how it works.

Caveat: your results may vary, so don't try to overly force the issue; if the knob won't give, you may be doing something wrong. Good luck - post pics/how it went when done.

don't pull so hard that when you pull it out, it pops off and you hit yourself on the head...

That's interesting. On my C240 6-spd, there's absolutely no division between a shift "knob" and the lever itself. It's as though the leather was slipped over the "internal stick" :p and then continues down to become the boot. Is the C230 different? When I looked at jack230's new pics, it does look like there's a division about halfway down where the knob might separate. I thought about getting a wood shift knob, but I don't think there's anyway I can change it.

On my C320 auto, the procedure is as tommy relates. I would use a credit card to wedge between the chrome bezel and the wood grain console.

First park the car with the lever pointing straight up (Turn the motor off while in Reverse). Pry up gently using the credit card, in several places... the bezel will pop-up Then, pull the bezel and boot up over the knob, (you won't get it over the knob, just as much as possible) and you'll see the twist lock tommy describes. (Dark gray/black, looks like a cone with raised, vertical ribs on it for grip). Turn it 1/4 turn counterclockwise, as you look down at it till it can't be turned anymore (this may take both hands to loosen). Then, pull up on the knob. Don't be shy, but don't crack your sunroof, either. It the lever is pointing up, you should be OK.

Tim: I don't have a new shift knob. I had to use the same procedure to get below the console to hardwire an electronic compass into the electrical system in the ashtray area.

So, sorry, Mr. Standard knob works fine for me.

I've heard of naming your cars, but naming your shift knobs? That's a little much. :p

I think that you could have gotten a more creative name as well. Especially coming from a telemarketer.

Jimbo - make sure that you post your results; I'd like to hear from someone who's actually done it. Thanks.

How do you install the wood shift knob on the automatic C320?

My friend just purchased a wood shift knob from oberklasse.com and he was wondering how to install it.... any websites with instructions would be great. if any of you installed it, how did you install it?

Pry up the chrome ring from the center console that holds the bottom of the leather shift boot.
It's plastic and there are extensions beneath it at front and back center to hold it in place.
Pull up the shift boot and ring (along with W/S switch and shift gate) to expose a nylon locking ring. Twist it 1/2 turn clockwise (or is it the other way?) and push it down on lever with the shift boot. Pull straight up on shift knob...mine was hard to pull off. Be carefull not to booger up the wood when you remove and replace the chrome ring/shift boot holder. The wood knob looks great.

The W/S switch and shift gate come up with the ring in one piece. It's a typical 5 minute job that will take you 1/2 hour. :-)

unscrew the black plastic part on the bottom, then lightly push down on the shift knob and twist it to either the right or the left (kind of like a child proof bottle of medicine) Im pretty sure that will work.

Post pics of your new knob when you get it on!

No, don't twist the shift knob. It will loosen up if you do it too much. Unscrew the black plastic piece at the bottom. It should turn (I forget which way) a small amount to unlock, and doesn't actually have to come off. Then just pull the shift knob straight up.

cool video...

do you do the reverse order after you are done? because I'm wondering if the release mechanism actually put the gear in Neutral.

good question !!! wasn't sure if the video depicted a manual tranny or an automatic ? hard to tell. Is that step necessary if you have an AUTO ?
I mean can't you just put the shift on Neutral ? It seems like it was unlocking something ? so I assume it needs to be locked back again when finished...
