Drive Shaft Help!!!

I think I have diagnosed the problem with my 2002 c230 coupe by searching the the forum and I believe it is the driveshaft insulation touching the drive shaft. I have a noise that can only be explained as a card in the spokes of a bicycle. When moving slow it ticks at a slow rate and as I speed up it speeds up. It only happens in the mid to late afternoon when it is hot out. Knowing what the problem could be does anyone have instructions and/or pics showing how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have had the same problem for about a year now. I always forget to mention it when I take it into the dealer. I would like to know how to do it yourself as well.

What is the typical cost to have something like this done. I decided to call the dealership in the last couple of hours and I don't want to get taken.

Jack your car up, remove the plastic panels below the driveshaft, and move/cut what is hitting it. It could be something wrapped around the shaft or U joints as well.

By removing the panel is the driveshaft exposed, and can you easily get to the insulation? I talked with a service manager and he was talking about having to remove the driveshaft to get to it. It was speculation on his part without seeing it but what i heard was "$$$ $$$$ $$$$$ $$$$" I agree that this should be something easy and don't want to be talked into a transmisson removal for something that can just be 4 bolts and a "Bang" or "Snip".

I just looked at my car (c320/auto) and you don't need to remove anything to see both ends of the driveshaft. It would be best if you put it up on a muffler lift (lifts at the wheels) so the center line is all exposed and walk underneath and take a look. Even Midas would probably do it for a few bucks, it's not like anything big is getting done....if that's the problem. I read one post that the person had the loose end of a nylon tie hitting the mounting bolts on the shaft. Did you already lift and spin each wheel to be sure that's not the source of the noise?
