Air Con Problem at HIgh Speed

Dear All,

Not sure if other W203 owners have this problem.. When I drive my car at speed excess of 120-140 km/h, for some strange reason, the air-con just switches off. It remains switch off until I slow down the vehicle and then it will automatically on back again! The same problem also happens when I suddenly accelerate the car as well. Any idea what is the problem?? I have a right hand drive W203. Thanks in advance!

All cars have this now days. It cuts off the AC compressor when the engine needs full power to accellerate. If you accellerate up past 120, its gonna kick out until the car is cruising again. An AC compressor can suck as much as 30HP from an engine.

Wow! THanks! I really did not know about the auto cut-out on the air-cond when accelerating past 120. Even my mechanic was not aware of this fact. In that case, I need not pursue the issue with the workshop. Cheers

Wait a minute....he said 120 KPH, not MPH. I regularly cruise at 145 KPH, or 90 MPH for hours at a time in the desert and I know my AC does not cut out. So if you accelerate hard through the gears the AC cuts in and out even in town? Or how about if you're climbing a hill or doing mountain driving, does it cut out when you need more power? I don't think so.

Absolutely. You just may not have your foot in it long enough to notice. He may have a diesel, or a C180, or gasp, the C160, which would be starving for power all the time. Cruising, at a steady speed, it should not disengage.

And yes, its real, and its designed to give the engine all the available power when the car needs to move or accellerate as fast as it can...think about it, would you want it any other way?

Makes sense to me if it's only for a burst of speed and not sustained.
