Is this a good price for brakes?

I went to Fletcher Jones here in Las Vegas and got the parts to do the front brakes myself before I have the dealer do a B service.

Brakes Pads: 0044205120 list $131.75 cost $100.00
Brake Rotors: 2034211312 list $136.00 ea cost $112.00 ea

Oh,, they threw in the 2 packs of brake paste for free..

How do I clean off the coating on the new rotors?

I was also thinking of installing the Goodridge brake lines since the dealer is going to be flushing and replacing the brake fluid this service.

This is from the place I use, Duval Motor's online site -

Brakes Pads: 0044205120 list $104.00 cost $78.00
Brake Rotors: 2034211312 list $107.00 ea cost $80.25 ea

I don't trust Fletcher, would never buy anything from them, car, parts or service. I used to take my car there all the time when it was owned by Jim Slemons (in their NB location) and they were really good, don't know what happened. Some dealers purposely mark up parts prices so they make you feel good when they discount them. But heck, 2 $2 packets of brake paste, how can you go wrong?

I rough up the rotor surface with emery cloth (not sandpaper), then wash it down with brake cleaner spray.

I dunno about rubbing the rotors with abrasives like emery cloth, it would probably create an uneven surface. Make sure you bed in the brakes properly. After a couple times of proper brake bed in and a few hundred miles of driving, the coating will come off anyway.

You would have to have a lot of strength and time to make it uneven. It's a common practice to roughen up the surface of brand new rotors (some already come this way). If you want to use what pro's use, here's the 3M brake rotor surface conditioning discs. I use emery cloth because it's convenient and cheap and I'm only doing one or two brake jobs a year. It's just one more step in making sure the brakes are squeel free from the start. Also, on freshly turned rotors, this is a good pratice to get any embeded metal filings out of the rotors that may embed themselves in the pad.
