Would 19x8.5 with 3" lip rub in the rear with 05 C230SS?

So, I have read in a couple of different places that 19" rims lower ride comfort quite a bit. Is there any truth to this? I have read more than one post stating over 18" is only for looks, as your ride quality suffers. Is a new suspension the answer to the 19" ride quality? Or is that coming from people who had rubbing issues that weren't resolved? I am new to modding a car, as this is the first one I have ever thought I might keep past the loan payoff.
Furthermore, I have heard that non-stock rims can be pretty soft and easy to bend/ruin. My area of the world is pretty notorious for pot holes and poor road quality, so I am really hesitant about getting interested in rims.
Edit: I realize the overall diameter of the wheel + tire shouldn't be that much larger between 18 and 19 if you pick the corrent tires, so I really don't understand what the difference in ride quality *could* be. Thanks in advance.
