In California, any tint on the front two windows is a ticket. I believe its $25 for the first infraction and increases with each subsequent ticket. Now, the cops don't have to have any other reason to stop you also. All they have to do is see the tint and, bam, cough up the cash and peel the tint.
Cig, did you get the moleskin kit with that. I've been reading you the window tint is scratching when you put the windows down, if you don't have the moleskin.

looks great i paid 180 for mine 20 percent all arounds i didnt get moleskin tho. Just make sure you have warranty on it incase it ever bubbles but this shouldnt happen unless they used cheap film. Also make sure you dont clean your windows with windex b/c windex has ammonia in it which makes them turn purple.... g luck

I was thinking of having my tint replaced, but after the quote I figured I could put up with the few scratches that I have. The quote that I got was approx. $40/window, (Moleskin + tint), the price would have been around $300 -350 at the time.

Scottw911: I let them know about the moleskin and talked with the guy who was doing the tint, he was fresh off the boat so I think there was some sort of language barrier the wasn't crossed. I have a lifetime warranty so I'm not too concerned. When I told the owner of the shop if there is no moleskin and the tint scratches I'm going to make him come pick up my car and replace it. He said "no problem".
Lambobenz: I used to detail cars and a guy I had doing interiors for me made me cough up 2 cars for ruining their tint by using ammonia on their windows. Be careful.
rlee02135: I was considering limo all the way around but I already don't have a front plate (Cali cops can be a little strict depending on where you're at).
I'll take some more pics from the side tomorrow. All in all I'm pretty happy with the look and how much cooler the inside of the car is. It's 84F today 11/19/06 and the tint is helping a ton.

Are you 100% sure on this? I too am in CA and looking to get tints- but have had friends (at least 2) get pulled over and ticketed for front window tint- but I think they had limo. How does 50% compare with limo?
What do you guys think about windshield tinting? Like a really light tint just to block the sun's intensity? Does it look too drug dealer or does it go well with the other tints? Also, there might be scratching problems with the winshield wipers.

If my memory serves me correctly, the updated law, from 2004 or 2005 I believe, prohibits ANY non-factory applied tinting to the front two windows of any car in California. If your recieve a citation, you must prove, with factory samples, that your tint is not any darker than the darkest tint the manufacturer offered. If the mfg. offered a 50%, then you would be OK.

Sorry to sound like such a kill-joy. I just hate to see people waste money on things like that.

I think it looks really good.
Hey, does anybody have tinted windows on a Pewter C-Class? (Post pics), I've thought about tinting, but I don't know how it'd look on the pewter color... I mean, Black/White/Red/Silver cars look natural, but haven't really seen it on my color.
Thanks.

Got mine for $200 [all around] for 35%. in the right area/price range. However, I woulda made it all the way around. be it light or dark. The reason i went with 35% is because yes it IS illegal for tinted front windows, but I figure if its light all the way around, it will look classy and clean. and if I did limo all around, being the fact that I'm in my 20's and cops are "male units" around here, I am trying to avoid being a target. Esp leaving the clubs at closing. oooooooomg, ANYTHING to pull people over. LAME!
but congrats on the tint! whatcha gonna do next?

"Vehicle Code
Transparent Materials
26708.5. (a) No person shall place, install, affix, or apply any transparent material upon the windshield, or side or rear windows, of any motor vehicle if the material alters the color or reduces the light transmittance of the windshield or side or rear windows, except as provided in subdivision (b), (c), or (d) of Section 26708.
(b) Tinted safety glass may be installed in a vehicle if (1) the glass complies with motor vehicle safety standards of the United States Department of Transportation for safety glazing materials, and (2) the glass is installed in a location permitted by those standards for the particular type of glass used.
Amended Sec. 2, Ch. 476, Stats. 1998. Effective January 1, 1999."
Sounds pretty strict to me, but here is the rest of the story:
Section (d) of 26708 states:"
(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met:
(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.
(2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205), including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as specified in that federal standard.
(3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the ability of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful ultraviolet A rays.
(4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the vehicle, a certificate signed by the installing company certifying that the windows with the material installed meet the requirements of this subdivision and identifies the installing company and the material's manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the material was installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by the material's manufacturer certifying that the windows with the material installed according to manufacturer's instructions meets the requirements of this subdivision and identifies the material's manufacturer by full name and street address.
(5) If the material described in this subdivision tears or bubbles, or is otherwise worn to prohibit clear vision, it shall be removed or replaced."
Now, the online Driver's Training Handbook states:
"Do not drive with tinted safety glass. If you have sun-sensitive skin, you may use removable sun screens during daylight travel if you have a letter from your physician."
I know, it's pretty lame and confusing on many levels. But to say it is legal to tint your windows to a certain level, in California, is goofed up. Section (d) does allow for 88% light transmittence, so I guess 18% dark is allowed (so, what is that, a ziploc baggie-dark?). Most likely, most people will get away with darker though.
