Swapping out a C180 Engine
Dear All,
I did a search on the forum, but couldn't quite find what I was looking for. So here is the situation.
In Egypt, they impose HUGE customs or any car over 2.0L infact, almost double the price of the car in fees. So most cars here are under 2.0L Now I just recently purchased a second hand 2002 C180 with the 1998cc engine.
Now Egypt imposes no restrictions (well only 30% tax) on spare parts. And I can have a motor imported from Germany or wherever.
Is it possible to swap out my 2.0 Engine for an AMG C36 Engine? from a technical view point? i know it will be expensive but I can put up to 15k Euro (little Under 20K) for the conversion. Is it possible. What parts would I need?
I heard I would need the Engine, the Transmission, and ECU. Someone also told me i need the Keys to match the ECU. Are the motor mounts different, suspension?
I appreciate all your help.

Contact mbenznl.com they know how to do deal with this "big" projects.
I think it will involve more than that for sure. C36 is a w202 or w203 model?

as for motorswaps, if your swapping for a C36, why not throw in the C32k or just a standard C350 motor. it would be quick enough

the C32K is great engine too .. i think it would fit better (same body) again Shipping the car is quite hard. But the mechanics here are quite resourceful. The only thing is I want to make sure that there wouldn't be any problems.. They do a lot fo 318 to M3 swaps.. engine and tranny.

W203 slightly modified
This is your shopping list
- engine
- exhaust
- transmission with torque converter
- engine control unit
- intercooler solution
- ignition switch
- drive shaft kit
- differential
- differential carrier
- rear axle
- front suspension (as the front is now too heavy)
- brakes increase (as the C180 brakes are useless)
- sway bars (to go with the suspension)
- transmission control unit
- dozens of special brackets and bolts
As for the 318 to M3 conversion I think that anyone who has seen the M3 in real life will know what a total waste of time it is. There are so many small differences.

ML 320 CDI
I spent one year in Alexandria and I remember the horrible tax fees for 2,0L+ cars.
1,6L was the most popular capacity. Pretty small regarding US habits....

I remember back in the 80's it was the same in East Africa, so people used to remove the "560" numbers from the old S-Class and put something like "280". Then after like 2-3 weeks when the car is registered and everything they'd put back the "560" numbers...

Your best bet would be to find a wrecked car with the drivetrain you want and use it for the swap. It's usually all the little pieces and peripherals that burn you with the kind of swap you want to do. It would also give you a model to go by. Probably also be cheaper than buying new parts. Can't answer the questions of compatibility though.

Wouldnt' a front clip make sense? Or is there more than that? Does anyone know a site where they sell AMG front clips? I don't want more power than a c32 for now.

The eaisest way to do this would be to find a w203 car with the engine you require and transfer all the components over. You will run into problems with the engine management unit if you do not do this. Also, depending on what year your c180 is and what year the car of the newer engine comes from, you will run into problems with communications between different modules.

ok Why do I need these are these:
- intercooler solution (Doesn't it come with the engine?)
- ignition switch (other than ECU?)
- drive shaft kit (Is it different than the one already in my car?)
- differential (?)
- differential carrier (Goes with above)
- rear axle (Different as well?)
- front suspension (as the front is now too heavy) <--- Chances I'd upgrade all suspension to coil overs
- brakes increase (as the C180 brakes are useless) (After market or AMG?)
- transmission control unit (Different than ECU?)
- dozens of special brackets and bolts (already with engine or have to be fabricated?)
Thanks

- intercooler solution DOES NOT USUALLY COME WITH SUPERCHARGED ENGINES
- ignition switch (other than ECU?)
THE VIN IS CODED HERE AND HAS TO MATCH THE ECU
- transmission control unit (Different than ECU?)
THIS ALSO HAS TO MATCH VINS ON EIS AND ECU

Wouldn't all of these be in a front clip?
