2002 C240 Purchase
After going back and forth in my own mind between the '02s and '03s, I finally let the money decide. Bought a Bordeaux '02 C240 Automatic with C2 [MSRP $34.5k] for $4500 off with the dealer incentive, from MB-Sacramento. This is a deal that is about as skinny as they get, since we are deep into the holdback at this level of discount, but Smythe in San Jose was advertising this price on all their leftover C240s, and my local dealer matched this without much hesitation.
This is my 14th MB since October, 1968. Will have to be the last for awhile...retirement income doesn't support this habit.
I started out looking for a late model used one, but the combination of relatively high prices and often neglected cars left me thinking it would be better to strike the best deal possible on a new one.

Congratulations John. I thought you were getting close to buying a coupe! ? Anyway, maybe we can burn up some back roads some time. I think the coupe and the C240 are pretty closely matched.
I live in Stockton and commute to Old Placerville Rd at Mather Field and drive a white coupe to work occasionally.
You made a great buy on that C240 and bordeaux is a great color too.
Hope you got a good one. Let us know how you like it.

jrct9454,
So you are actually paying $30,000 for your car?? That is $2000 below invoice price
. I have been looking for a '02 C320 and I was quoted $500 over invoice about a month ago. Please let me know the amount you paid for your car before tittle and tax so that I can use it to bargain with my dealer. thanks. have fun with your car.

Price
Well, I thought I had done that, but here goes again:
2002 C240 with Met Pnt, Auto, and C2
MSRP $34,525
Transaction Price $30,025 plus taxes and lic and fees.
Invoice on this car is about $32.2k; holdbck is another $1000; dealer incentive right now on C sedans is$1500, so their raw cost before flooring is in the neighborhood of $29.7k or thereabouts, plus or minus the odd dollar or two. So, they didn't hurt themselves, and I felt like I got an excellent deal.
Additionally, this car had been in stock for over 6 months - this gave my salesman [whom I've dealt with before] some leverage. They have at least 10 C240s around with MSRPs in the range of $34.5 - $35k, with the higher numbers being cars with C2 and the Bose system [a complete waste of money IMO].
As well, be aware that dealers in SoCal are already discounting the '03s to a level of $600 or so over invoice [try the guy in Torrance], as many of them are actually low on '02 inventory thanks to the dealer incentives.
Bottom line - this is a great time to buy if you are in a competitive market. It's never a great time to buy if you're not...
